Not a big fan of those ideas... it will turn some real people away... how about generating a phrase as an image and they have to type it in to register? Works pretty well for lots of other people.

I agree Bill, I am afraid of turning away real and interested people. Most of the spammers come in make one thread or post and never return so not too bad to just delete the threads. The image idea might work, but not sure how to go about it.

Image Verification is built into vBulletin 3.6.x. We should upgrade and enable this feature. Here are a few other good suggestions:

Bart is going to do a vBulletin upgrade for us hopefully in the next week or two, then we could add in the image verification.

Most of the spammers you are seeing are probably bots. Banning IP's won't work as most of them are faked anyway. I'm not sure about the image verification in vBulletin, but in phpBB, the bots can get by it.

What seems to be working in the phpBB community, is a mod called VIP code. basically, it's just textual phrase verification, but it is unique to your site. You decide what the message is and where it is placed, so a bot won't be able to figure it out. A human spammer will, but there are very few of those.
