  • Wud up with "New Vee Dub"?

Just wondering, anyone ever consider changing the club name???

It just seems that Newveedub is a bit of a misnomer since members don't necessarily have to own "new" Volkswagens. Also, with the soon to be released mk5 platform, doesn't that make any mk4 "less than new"? I've been questioned a few times on the street about the nature of the name and, well, don't really have any good answers At WoW alone there alot of spectators commenting on it.

Also, the club is really starting to take off now and is really evolving, so wouldn't it be good to change the name now instead of later? There's alot of potentially cool names out there looking at some of the U.S. VW clubs so......

Why don't we take a poll and see if everyone wants to do a change of the name...

Re: Wud up with "New Vee Dub"?

Well this is an issue that comes and goes, and has a lot of pros and cons. Firstly the name was orginally chosen to promote the MK4 generation of dubs but we have never been afraid or against people with other generations to be involved in the club. However the term newveedub can have a broader definition as VWs have been around for a long time, so new can represent the more recent generations of dubs and not just this years model.

We also are getting to be established as a club and a name change could possibly result in a slight starting over process to earn respect again. Costs are also always a factor, I am just trying to get new stickers made, so I would really not like to waste a couple hundred of dollars and obsolete promotional items, along with having domain and web changes. This city does also have another VW club, so keeping ourselves slightly unique helps us distinguish ourselves as a group, not that we have any problems with anyone but some of our success is/was based on creating a niche.

A change in name may not make things easier to explain to people as we still have to always explain what a bora is, and perhaps getting people to ask questions is not a bad thing. However this is a club and the members are in control so if a name change is a desired thing then we can look at making it happen.

Please feel free to post up your thoughts and comments.

      Thanks

Why not just answer them with "It has a radiator"? Anything non-air cooled would qualify, and still allow for MKIII, MKIV and MKV dubs??

I am against changing the name. After careful thought, I think we would lose a lot of publicity and recognition, which cannot be replaced.

Yeah, quite a few people might lose who we are in the changeover.

When I hear NewVeeDub I think of water cooled dubs, not Mk4, etc...

I dunno, to me the name has always sounded kinda blatently obvious. Like a classic car club calling itself Myoldchevy.com. Just doesn't seem very creative.
As far as publicity is concerned, well, that doesn't really seem like that big a deal. All it would take is some posting in different forums, an announcement, and a car show or two, and it will be like NVD never existed. Organizations, companies, and people change their names all the time. Oh well, guess I'm flying solo on this one..... I can live with it if everyone else can

vwvortex is a dumb name too, but you don't see posts where people want to change it! The name is not what matters...

I've kinda always thought we should change the name. We are getting larger and much more varied so something more creative than "newveedub" would suit us more. At the same time, we aren't big enough so that a name change would make us lose respect with anyone (I'm not sure why changing the name would hurt anything?). Plus, there are Mk3's in the club and joining the club, and the new MK5 will end the whole newveedub thing...if the name was broader we could incorporate Audi's and MK3's without being harassed about the name. I'm sure there would be some costs like stickers and domain name, but in the end I think it would be a good idea.
