Re: Wheel powder coat/painting
From what I have been told.. DONT powdercoat wheels. The high heat cycles weakens the integrity of the wheel. Most aftermarket wheels come painted, and they will hold up to whatever you throw at them if done properly.

A powder coated wheel will outlast a painted wheel any day of the week.Last edited by popp; 09-15-2009, 08:17 AM.Don't Panic, I'm Hispanic

Re: Wheel powder coat/painting
Thats not true at all.. sitting in an Oven for XX time at 400 degrees is no where comparable to being in 100 degree heat with the wind cooling as you drive.
From a bit more reading online.. it depends on the material of the wheel and the temperature and time/length of the coating process. you need low temp (250) and short time powdercoat. Skip the 400+ and long length ones...
Many articles on 6speedonline (HRE Employee speaks up, they use PC.. but low temp, low time)
Check out this Engineering forum.. where it is discussed.

One more to quote a TireRack employee:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/whee...fe-or-not.html
"I have personally seen wheels that were powder coated have severe structural integrity issues because of the heat used in powder coating ...
the process uses enough heat to cause annealling of the the metal. Wheels which are heat treated for added strength are affected more severely than wheels which are not heat treated.
Wheels that are destined to be powder coated are manufactured under slightly different conditions and processes.
I would not recommend power coating a wheel.
A large majority of wheels are painted "

Re: Wheel powder coat/painting
that may be the case for overbaking, and I can't argue with tirerack employees ,
There will always be 100's of pages with pros and cons to everything under the sun (god bless interwebs.) Google best technique for cross stitching a blanket and you'll see.
I've powdercoated pretty much every wheel I've owned in the past 5-6 years on 3 cars (about 20) and have had over 100 customers wheels coated and none have had any issues regarding compromises in weakening the integrity of the wheels.Don't Panic, I'm Hispanic
