  • Bigger Rear Brakes

    Hey Simon,

I was wondering if you could get bigger rear discs for my GLI. I know that the front does 90% of the work, but I want it more for looks. That back ones look so small compared to the front. By the way, the fronts are 312mm.

    Thanks,

    Kyle

    Re: Bigger Rear Brakes

Not knowing why EU not able to answer the query. There are a couple of factors you need to consider when you start design your own brakes(DYOB). First, consider if the modifications do you any good on handling. Second, do you have any free flow cash for this gambling mod-game. Third, if the car handle weird are you still happy after all energy you put in?

At least you get it right on the 90% work up front brakes(Most people say F 80% and R 20%). The real world is that theory holds if and only if the ABS not kicks in. Why? If your car equipped with the electronic brake distribution(EBD) the front and rear brakes force bias will switch continuously. 4-channel ABS on your I assume. In some cases the front can do less work and the rear do more, moreover, different brake force on each individual wheel. You might heard of Audi/VW has the tendency of rear pads wear faster than the front pairs. Some said they do mostly freeway driving. That theory holds because at high speed, you first step on the brake paddle the rear respond earlier than the front. That’s the reason why the rear set pads goes out first.

IMHO EBD on ‘My’ VWs isn’t impressive compare some other sports cars can do. Anyway you can do as much as you want on your car. DYOB all the way.

      Re: Bigger Rear Brakes

EU Tuning was not able to answer the query because I have been trying to find a cost effective solution. The thing is your brakes at 256mm are as big as an R32 setup in the rear so finding an inexpensive larger alternative is tough!
