  • Repair estimate seemed high, what do you think?

Got a couple of small rust bubbles in my drivers side rear door, one is about the size of a quarter all together and the rust bubble has burst and the other is smaller than a dime. What should I be looking at price wise to get this repaired? I could basically do all the prep work needed if I had to, I wouldn't be able to paint it myself though. Here are some pics so you can see what I'm talking about. Had an estimate done this morning and came back over $800, this is basically my first vehicle nice enough to require putting money into something like this so maybe my idea of repair costs for it are little out of whack.

Also, who would you recommend to do get this done?

    Cheers!

    That seems roughly right.

I'd give the guys over at Stampede Collision a call (403) 235-2277.

Might be cheaper to buy a used door or door panel.

Tough to get anything done for less than $500 at a body shop.

Damn. I have a couple similar spots on the Passat I was thinking about getting looked at, but I don't think I'll worry about it now

Same the profits are insane! I have been in the industry for over 10 years and learned a few tings for sure. I need to get a shop setup down here to help out members. When I see quotes like that it makes me sick :(

                        Try micro paint. http://micropaint.ca/locations/

They fixed a WAY worse boo boo than that for a bit over $800 for me.

I am not sure why body and paint costs have gone through the roof. If the OP's quote for $800 represents a rate of $65-75 dollars an hour then that would mean to the two coin size spots represents 11-12 hours of labor?? Some one recently had a quote for a respray to fix stone chips and clear coat peeling for 10k!! At these hourly rates that is 130-150 hours?? Auto paint must have gone up to 7k a gallon! No wonder insurance rates are skyrocketing.

A few of us were discussing this this weekend, so here is a plan. Plan a 2-3 week vacation in California, Nevada etc. Take the whole family have your car sprayed for 2-3k and spent the other 7k golfing, eating, drinking etc.

Around here the body shops charge a bit more than that per hour for paint.

Depending on your paint, some additives to create the proper colour can be very expensive too, in the range of $100-$200 for a small can. Granted that can should make a lot of paint, but your paint may contain from 5 to 15 of these additives so it does add up.

Just guessing here and playing devils advocate but the entire cost to fix these spots isn't going to be just labour. Paint is going to be a factor here as well. And as witchcraftz said above, paint isn't that cheap. On smaller projects like this they probably have a minimum that they have to purchase/mix up so that probably adds to the cost of a small project. And just another guess but if the spots were twice or three times as big, i doubt the cost would really be that much different. They may be able to get away with a bit more but nothing significant.

Also i second going to the states for a full paint job. I have heard of people getting full re-sprays for $1500 and changing the color with jambs/everything for $2500. Not sure exactly where but it definitely piques my interest when i hear those numbers.
