  • Hi, New Member 1.8T looking for advice

    Hey All,

Nice to see there is a scene here.

I had to sell my Mk2 when we moved and believe me i missed it more than home itself for 4 years so i finally went out and picked up a 2000 MkIV GTI 1.8T AWD. its got a couple of probs and is sat in my garage at the mo but, yeah, it looks the part and it feels damn good to be back in the seat again

I came across the site looking for advice and answers what to do with the new beast. The clutch, brake lights and drivers heated seat are all dead. But my main worry is the clutch, i got it off someone who'd only had it for a year and didnt know much about it and theres no paper work with it (yeah i know but lifes a gamble).

Anyway, Its lowered with an Airdesign body kit and its got a a TurboXs BOV so im a bit concerned that it may have been chipped/remapped and if putting a standard clutch in wont be a match for the power if it has been. So I was wondering if there is any easy way to tell if its been worked on (beside a rolling road, hard to do with little clutch left). Do they have to do anything to the computer that would be visible etc? any easy way to tell?

I was thinking of taking it to a garage (if there is one knowledgeable enough) to get it looked over and to see if they can spot any none standard stuff etc n tell if it is mapped, maybe they could work out if a bigger clutch was needed? from browsing the forums it sounds like TuneDub may be the place? but id rather find out without paying a bunch for it.

Thanks in advance for any ideas anyone has, all ideas are gladly received

    Oh, heres a piccy,

    Looks awesome to me

    Cheers,
    Kordain.

PS Couldn't find info on joining the club, so if anyone can point to the right place

Welcome to the boards...nice looking car.

Yes, Tunedub is the place to go if you don't want to go to a dealership. A couple of members here work for South Centre Fine Cars, where your Eurodrivers membership gets you a discount.

Becoming a member....best place is the monthly meets. They are the first thursday of the month at the Boston Pizza at Deerfoot Meadows. Have a peek in the Meets section and you will find details there.

Can't help on the clutch....lots of threads on it recently.

My driver's seat heater stopped working as well. Diagnosed as a bad element. Pricey to replace.

    Good luck & welcome!

Lots of people just put in a VR6 clutch, thats not a bad idea if you're replacing it.

Welcome to the club, there are a couple things you can map with diagnostic tools to tell you if it is remaped or not. Personally I wouldn't worry to much about it being remaped, a remap alone is not enough to total a stock clutch but if you need to replace it you might as well put in a better one. As for heated seats I have some in my garage I can pull the heaters from if you are interested.

                  Cheers,

It will be a couple of months before i get it on the road, ill wait for the ice to clear first i think, but then ill have a look into the seat and work out whats up with it.

Does the VR6 clutch just drop straight in or does it require a change of fly wheel? I read in a couple of places that one with a g60 flywheel is the best combo but no idea if thats true or not, ill search these forums for posts re clutches soon. Its a good point to put a better one in coz if its not mapped then it probably will be soon enough.

Its only done 160,000km but i think the girl who had it before me had never driven a manual shift before and rode the clutch to death. I take it they should last a bit longer than that?

Cheers and Happy new year to all

Yeah you need to change the flywheel when you change to a VR6 clutch, and yes the G60 flywheel is the normal choice. You usually take this opportunity to put in a lightened flywheel too, since you're right there and labour difference is negligable. I have the VR6 clutch and lightened G60 flywheel combo from autotech and its about $1000 installed.

I was looking through older posts on this the other day and so your comments in there a couple of times. I was gonna ask. what is the normal size and weight of a stock flywheel and what is sensible to go down to on weight. From reading the older posts i got the impression a 14lb one would be suitable and i think a 228mm is required for that VR6 clutch.

Also, is this the AutoTech you are referring to?

Yip, thats the kit I have with the OEM VR6 clutch. Can handle roughly 300 torque apparently without any hassle, with reports of much more too..

Stock flywheel I think is 21 or 22 lbs, so down to the 14lbs of the lightened autotech one is a good improvement. I've seen some people go down to 7 or 8 lb flywheels for even more performance but I also hear that it will chatter more.

Also suggest getting rid of the BOV and putting in a forge 007 or some similar Diverter valve. VWs are metered before the valve, instead of after like subaru/nissan.

And vr6 clutch/g60 fly is best choice even if you're stock IMO. Simon could set you up with a simple upsolute chip if you think you're stock programming.

It says BOV on the top but i think it is actually a Diverter valve, it is not open to vent to atmosphere, its piped back to somewhere, i couldnt quite work out where by following the pipes though. The valve itself is like the Type 25 & H34 on this page. is that what you mean by a diverter?

One more little question on the clutches, Steel or Aluminum flywheel? do you know why they offer both? seems the ali one will wear a lot faster?

                            Cheers
