Currently I'm driving my 94 jetta and reliability wise I have no problems with it. It never dissapointed me and the parts for it is cheap. Now I'm thinking 0f buying a 01 Jetta but when I read reviews about it most of the people write that they (mk4s) are unreliable and expensive to fix. Please help me decide what to do. Should I keep my old mk3 or upgrade to mk4. How relaible your mk4 is???

Re: question to mk4 owners
Consumer reports should be taken with a grain of salt. Mk4's do have their quirks for sure (window regulators, coilpacks etc.) but my 1.8t gti, which has quite a few mods, has been very reliable. More so in fact than my friends 2001 bone stock, babied, acura mdx. Maybe not the norm, but true.
If your mk3 was a vr6, I might say keep it, but trading in your 2.slow for a 1.8t mk4 would be worthwhile for sure.2012 gti, 2012 mustang.

Re: question to mk4 owners
Do the T/belt at approx 100,000km, as for the reliablity on the 1.8t vs the 2L I personally think they are about equal! I work in a VW only shop and each car has thier pesky little issues but the maintenence costs are virtually identical, IE T/belt replacement, oil changes, fuel, air and pollen filters, brakes on the turbo car are a little more money but not much! I would say go for the mk4, chip it and have fun!Current toys

Re: question to mk4 owners
I am a little disapointed at the realiability of my 01 2.0l golf. It has been mostly electrical problems. But quite a few in the last little year. I have 130,000km on it.
If I didn't have a buddy who is an awsome mecahanic I would have sold it a long time ago.

Re: question to mk4 owners
I have an MK4 1.8T
It runs great
Minor issues have came up a few time though(airbag light, window motor, etc...)
Although your right about the expansive to fix part...
Ive dropped about $4500 into fixing it up
About $4000 of that was my own fault though
Parts can be difficult to find if you dont like dealing with the dealerships either or you dont live near a dealership-Drew

Re: question to mk4 owners
I can get a 1.8T but my main concern is reliability because if I buy a new car I dont want to spend all of my savings on repairs and since the 2.0 should be more reliable I would rather go with less performance but more money in my pocket.Plowing the streets of north side

The 8v's are good motors, but not much fun when they are in a heavy ass mk4.2012 gti, 2012 mustang.
