    Re: Timing Belt

From the dealership I believe its in the neighborhood of 1200bean (as they replace the water pump at the same time, its almost stupid NOT to replace the water pump while they are down there)

my old jetta had it done by George and i think it came in around 800

        Re: Timing Belt

i *think* they changed the type of belts they used in '02 and they dont need to be changed until 120km...I could be way off base. I got mine done at 120ish tho and George said he had a decent amount of life left in it still

edit: As for a good place to go, check out TuneDub

            Re: Timing Belt

I just had mine dont at Tunedub by George as well. 120ish is what I have heard too, mine was at 128 and you could see it was starting to crack. It was about 750 in total

the TDI's are closer to 90k, that probably where you got that from. and yeah, when the time comes, do the water pump regardless.

                    Re: Timing Belt

Our timing belts last a lot longer, but as mentioned, the water pump with the plastic impeller is **** and when it goes, the hydrolic tensioner can fail and let the timing belt go. New water pumps have the metal piece.

I'm doing mine right before 100K. OEM Timing belt/pump kit from the US is cheaper than dealer parts prices.

Like i said above, the 02 and newer belts have a longer life (or so i was told)..Most people with 00 and 01 are using the newer belts when they get replaced i think

So it's the 2.0 slow, $30 for the belt and two hours of work.

                            uhh no.

the water pump on my mk4 2.0 let go in the spring and it was around 900 bucks for a new pump and belt at SCFC. you still have to move all of the powersteering and coolant crap out of the way to access the waterpump
