Re: I keep trying - Another bad SCFC experience.

I was afraid someone was going to ask this.

We needed a car for the GF and quick. She dropped to an old beater from a Jetta just to be able to qualify for as much mortgage as she could then would move back up after. Well, the house has been bought and the plans were to buy in February, then the control arm mount on the frame of the beater just snapped. Not worth fixing.

Anyway, rentals are expensive and somehow I have broken all three of my cars and she wanted back in to the VW family. We got PO'd at SCFC dude so for giggles before we went up to NLVW we stopped in at the Chevy dealer at McLeod and Glenmore as she gets a nice discount with GM thru her employer.

The end of the story is that she bought a brand new 2006 Chevy Optra with 21.4 km with 0 down and 0% interest over 48 months for an all-in (tax, fees, etc) price of $12,980. STUPID CHEAP.

It's pretty un-loaded and has no personality however personality and 'loaded' (i.e. City Golf) would have cost $6,000 more at 5.9%. Not worth the price of admission when you drive 6 km a day to the c-train station and have a boyfriend who might let you drive his GTI for a reasonable price.

I'm pretty sure the "crazy bald guy" you are talking about sold me my Jetta. If it is him, he is a VERY nice guy and certainly treated me and my girl friend right. Derek was pretty cool in the finance office too. (Had to get that plug in for you Derek)

Anyway, as a salesperson myself, I appreciated the service that both of these guys provided to me and have received reciprocal business from both of them on products that I sell.

I disagree with the statement from Smarty "I just think salesmen in general are brutal." No question, there are some really crappy sale people out there, but with the network of contacts from this site alone you should be able to find one that will treat you right.

Neon, it sounds like you are condeming SCFC for a saleperson that was looking at you funny while you were waiting for the salesperson that you were referred to. You didn't even give your referred salesperson a chance. With the labour market currently available in Calgary, and most of Western Canada for that matter, you are going to be lucky if you don't have these experiences regulary over the next decade. Employers have very little choice on who they hire due to the shortages. In many cases it is a "hail Mary" at best.

I am not condeming SCFC for just one salesman. They are being taken off my list because of repeated annoyances over the past number of years. It is true that many of these experiences have been the result of the actions of one person, however labour shortage or not the people you hire are your company and if you are truly concerned about delivering top quality service then you will realize that you just gotta pay more. Simple. I can guarantee you that a few thousand a year will not make the owners go hungry.

I have experienced many examples of poor service due to the labour shortage and that is why I tip them poorly when the situation requires tipping, and do all the shopping I can online.

I would suggest, in many cases, it is not a money issue. It is a shortage of qualified people issue. At my business we have been trying to find some qualified sales people for the last 12 months, and we have the highest commission structure in the business. The average monthly commission paid is well above $5K, heck one of the guys made over $140K last year and will make well over that this year. You can't tell me it is wage in that case. A business also can't just wait for someone to come along either, otherwise the customers complain that there isn't anyone to help them. It is a double edged sword in the retail business right now and business owners, for the most part, are making due with what is available. Profit margins are not going up so there is certainly not an unlimited level of wage that can be paid either.

                    Example:

Gross Profit Margin: 20% (This is high for many retail businesses)

Average SG&A: 9% (Typical operating expenses, building, maintenance, utilites, insurance etc.)

Wage to Sales: 8% (% of sales paid out in wage and benefits. This is low for some, high for others)

Net Profit Margin: 3% (Based on no unexpected expenses)

So a business that is grossing $500000 in sales per month is making a net of $10000. If you had $490000 to invest, would you invest in a vehicle that only returns 1 - 5% on a good year? Many business owners out there are doing just that.
