    AWWW Crud!!!

    So, it looks like I dropped my key today rather than putting it in my pocket at the LRT station. How's that for a fine "how do you do" on your birthday!?!

    Anyway, if it's really lost, what's involved in re-keying? How much is it going to set me back? Any opinions on re-keying versus running the risk that there's some pinheads running around pushing the buttons and finding my car and goin' for a little joyride?

    While I don't have any explicit answers to any of your questions... I do offer my sympathy. I think that re-keying will set you back a large dollar amount. You are better off just ordering a new key (which will still be expensive).

    The odds are pretty slim that someone would find your key and end up getting into your car with it.

    Also, if I may point out the obvious, you should probably check with Calgary Transit lost and found on the off chance someone found it and turned it in.

        i *think* you can re program your keys and car when you get a new key, and this would render the keyless on the missing key useless. Key would still work, but car would not respond to random clicks

          Yeah sorry for your birthday loss Could be tough as if the 'wrong' person found your key they would probably assume you park there daily and not that many VWs in a Ctrain lot to check.

            I know when I got a new valet key...and this is only a valet key
            It cost me around $50. Keys are not cheap for VW's...

              Thanks for all the b-day wishes and such.

              I tried calling NL and they hung up on me....I'm done with them.

              Left a message with SCFC, so we'll see what they have to say. I'll let y'alll know what they suggest and what the price winds up being. Hopefully it does get turned in to Transit Lost 'n Found...

                i think it cost me like $100 somtin to get a valet key cut for my car at northland, i just keep it at home in case i lose my other key.

                  OK, called NL again since SCFC didn't call back.

                  $200ish for a new key
                  $50 ish to reprogram the keys/car
                  Around $800 to change lock tumblers and re-cut the keys.

                  The moral?
                  DON'T LOSE YOUR KEYS!

                    You can buy a cheap transmitter and blank from this chinese company, I have the link at home let me know if you want it. They are not knockoffs that I know of but I do hear they work. After that you can get the dealership to cut it for you can get someone to reprogram your keys for you. That way if by chance someone with your key can open your car with the key but not the remote or start it for that matter.

                      That'd be great if you can get me the link. Now I just have to twist Stephan's arm to try a re-program at the meet next week (weather permitting).

                        Just search ebay for a switchblade key with the same serial number as your car. I needed to get another key for the S4 when we bought it and that's what I did. The dealership wanted $94 for the key and $226 for the switchblade remote part....oh, and you can reprogram it yourself, so don't let them charge you $50 bucks for it!

                        I ended up getting the key for $0.99 (yes, 99 cents) and the switchblade remote part for $49.99...do some research and you'll find what you're looking for.

                          Most dealer ships wont cut the switchblade keys! they are more of an order by number kind of thing! Just to make you sleep better the key that you lost will be useless, after pushing the button so many times the key will not work in the car any longer, (trust me we have had to reprogram some keys due to a customer or employee pressing the key fob to many times out of range of the car) Happy B day by the way!

                            Now I don't endorse the vag-com knockoffs they sell as it is a stollen design of someone I know. But they do have cheap keys but I think you can buy them just as cheap at worldimpex.com.
