  • New Beetle Tranny issue - Help...

My friend's new beetle with the automatic tranny (2.slow) is in the shop right now due to some transmission issues.

between 45 and 50 km/h, upshifting from 2 to 3rd gear, she says her revs go sky high. The car sometimes shudders. She says this is happening when the car is warmed up and then once it begins to do it, it's consistant till she turns the car off.

Mechanic couldn't find the symptoms saying it drove normally. (likely didn't drive long enough)

They are saying the tansmission fluid is "burnt" and is only suggesting a flush with no further diagnosis. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of a good transmission shop where she might be able to take the car to get a more certain answer?

    Thanks folks.

Interesting, the same thing is happening to a friend of a friend. He's taken it to the shop 3 times (wish I could say I was surprised) and each time got it back saying nothing's wrong with it. He's so irritated he's trading it in for a Hyundai last I heard. I try talking to them about about VW and they think i'm crazy (not the only problem he's had).

Sorry I can't be more help but I'd be inclined to think it is a defect.

Just thought I'd update everyone. She met with the service manager who suggested that she sell the car rather than have it fixed - despite not knowing what the problem was.

      hmmm....

well, if selling it isnt an option, id just bite the bullet and at least get a tanny flush done, and then see.

better to be out 60$ or whatever than to have to buy a brand new tranny

Then: 69 SC Transporter, 84 Rabbit GTI, 87 Fox GL, 91 Golf IDI, 96 Passat Wagon TDI, 97 Jetta IDI

I would guess the gear is not engaging.

I am not a transmission expert but I think its a sound hypothesis. So when the driver believes they have selected the gear and they release the clutch pedal and resume the throttle, it revs as though it was in neutral (at least until the gear does engage).

Transmission rebuild. Take it to someone who really knows transmissions and they will take it apart and be able to find that something has worn.

I think this could be a clutch related issue. Not necessarilly a worn clutch disc though. Has it ever been replaced?

          Or sell the car.

No fault codes that I'm aware of.

Not good news for her. She's going to be bummed to hear it.
