  • Getting Rid of Rust

    Hi Guys,

I purchased a 1992 VW Jetta and it has a few rust spots that I would like to get rid of/contain. Wondering what I need to accomplish this. So far I've been told to use sandpaper to sand it down and then a compound to place on top. Has anyone done this before? Wondering what supplies I need to do this. Any help is appretiated.

    Thanks!

    Re: Getting Rid of Rust

When I had my old 86 gti, it had lots of rust around the windshield, i just grinded it all off then primered it, maybe put some bondo over, and painted it.

But rust usually comes back. theres usually some kind of anti rust you can purchase at canadian tire, and other similar places.

weld in new pieces thats probobly your best bet. if its surface rust you can sand it down. if its bubling from underneath then you gotta weld!

Any kind of products you would recommend in particular based on experience? Most of the rust right now appears to be surface only so I figure I should tackle this problem soon.

well if you have rusted screws or bolts for example which don't want to come undone, poor coke on them, wait, and voila, just like using wd-40 lol.

If you have a power drill or dremel, use a stainless steel wire attachment. That will remove the rust and paint. Then sand it to smooth it off. The metal will be pitted so you will need to then wipe it with rust-neutralizer and bondo it. I hope you're good with bondo. Then sand the bondo. Primer, then sand, then paint.
