My buddy has found one he likes what should i be looking for when we go take a look. I have my VAG so we will see the codes and such but what are some of the usual suspects on this car. We will take the car in for an inspection if everything looks alright but would like the heads up on some of the usual probs.

    thanks

How many KMs? Around 120-130 the timing belt should be replaced, and while they're in there they usually do water pump too...Not a cheap jorb so id check to see if thats done.

yep, timing belt for sure. Manual says 96,000km replace for a 2001, mine was missing teeth by about 90,000km. If it needs to be replaced, it can be replaced with a belt from a 2002 that will get ya 128,000km. Also, if the EGR was never turned down, there is a good chance of some intake clogging (also not too cheap, but a few guys here have cleaned it themselves). On the upside, the clogging shouldn't re-occur now that we have the ultra-low sulphur diesel. I've seen a lot of coolent sensor 'soft' codes that dont trip a CEL, but will leave a code. This is a cheap fix though. For sure their have been a couple recalls, but those shouldnt cost you anything. (ie. window clips, break switch)

Its got about 125K so we are thinking he is selling so he doesnt have to get the TB done. He said he had replaced the MAF once but thats about it. I guess we will see tonight. Funny you mention coolant sensors i have to put my 3rd one in in less than one year i think i am going to ask for one that has a 1yr warranty because i am tired of cutting up my hands trying to get to it on my car (back of engine next to firewall).

yeah, @125k km, i'd get the TB done right away. Try and use it as leverage to bring the price down a bit . I think its around 7-800$ for TB and water pump. (the 2002 version of the TB is almost the same price ans the 2001 version).

            Re: 2001 Jetta GLS TDI

I thought you can replace it with a 160 000 km belt from the 03's up.

Check to see if the car pulls to redline and definately bring the price down if it hasn't had the timing belt done.

My water pump went on the weekend and we did the timing belt at the same time... dealership cost with discount $975 including tax. Ouch.

ouch, mine wasnt that much, but i dont think they charged me labour for the water pump.

and hey, if you can get a 160k km belt in there, giver!

nah, tacoma or FJ cruiser. Ima finance somethin like that so i always have a good winter beater...Then ill move on to the project in the spring

Right now teh tacoma is wining because the financing rates on the FJ's are like 7.3%..but i think i can hit up the bank of dad for an intrest free loan and i'm all over the look of the FJ these days

its not that i dont like the jetta, but you cant keep a car lookin good when you drive it as a daily

I tried to talk him into one but knowing how many days he has had to drive me to work because my car isnt running he didnt go for it. Also his last car that recently died was a honda w/400+K on it.
