A couple questions...have a 2000 GTI and a few lights have burnt out in the dash (mainly ones that light up temp/fan controls). Where do I need to take apart the dash to get to the inside of this temp control to change LED light? Can't seem to see any recessed bolts/screws. I once had to replace ashtray and took apart panels adjacent to gear shifter...

Also, I have factory cruise on this model...just push in button and it is activated....I used to think a light came on telling me cruise was in use...but lately no light comes on....am I hallucinating or did it never come on?

Got a broken hinge on my glove compartment too...anyone know if I need an entire new glove box, or can you buy doors a stand alone?

Last one...got a broken knob for power side mirrors...ordered a replacement module but how do you get old one out?? Fitted in door next to power window controls and does not appear to have any screws.

Thanks, and no the car isn't falling apart!

No screws need to be turned....DO NOT take apart your dash to fix this. Turn the Fan Switch to '2' so it is straight up and down and pull it straight out. You'll likely need a pair of pliers and something to protect the switch from getting scratched. Then, pull the bulb straight out and put the new one straight in. It is a normal little bulb (don't know the size), not and LED.

I've never seen a cruise light from my factory cruise....

Replace the entire box, I believe.....someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.

Take the door card off. There's a rubber piece on the door handle (the back side of it). It pulls out towards the door into the little notch you stick your hand in when closeing the door. Once you pop it out, then enire plastic part comes off and you can disconnect the wires. There are 3 big screws that you can see once this part is out of the way....take them off. There's about 4 screws along the bottom of the door that you need to take out. Then you can just lift the door card off. Be careful as there are other parts still connected (like the wiring for the hatch / gas door release, light, etc.). Once you are behind the card, you should be able to see the part you are wanting to replace and remove it.

    Good luck!
    Jeff

is the glovebox hinge broken? or just missing the pin that holds the hinge together? the hinge pin on mine wiggled out, and while i was looking for it (in behind the radio) i found it and a second pin too.. apparently the first owner had had problems with it and lost the pin once already and bought another. Seems like that pin is poorly made at any rate.

On my 02 model, the cruise is a switch on the left lever and when the switch is turned on, a green "CRUISE" symbol appears in the tachometer. Is it the same as yours or is it a little different?

You can program the cruise to be off all the time or cut one of the pins on the back of the cluster. As for the glove box door you can buy it by itself, if you just broke the hinge you can do a quick fix on it but it may not last forever, do a serach on the TDIclub for a writeup on how to fix it and also a mod to the dorr dampner so it won't be so harsh on the hinges. Now about the power mirror control you can pry it out without taking off the door card but you WILL make up the door and the door card is not that hard to get off (again search vwvortex or tdiclub for pictures).

Sorry for late response but Thanks to all who replied ...been busy with a new baby so now with the long weekend can finally get to fixin things. Awesome advice.

As for the glove compartment, the plastic hinge is actually broken (snapped I guess when the glove box had manual sticking out and I tried to force it in...). Was hoping some crazy glue or plastic polymer glue would fix it, but not confident about strength.

I think I can order a door replacement for it...however problem would be with the rekeying of the lock and still need to take out entire glove box to install new door. Saw a used glove box taken out of a wreck and looks like about 8 screws need to be taken out from top and bottom of box, then you need to pop off plastic pressure rings (not sure if those even come off to get door off of glove box. Part of the dash also has to be dismantled as one bolt appears to be hidden behind a panel.

It was part way through 01 it got phased in, no light on my 01 GLS. There is a one page supplement in my owners manual that the light may not be there. Caught my attention because the cruise didn't work when I bought my car in 02 (dealer reset it and it works fine).

Dito the glove box is the bigest P.O.S. on the entire car. Fricken thing broke on me in the first year I had it. Been driveing around since 2001 with it broke.
