    Re: White walls!!??

[QUOTE=Volkstech]bocefus I'm lovin Your ride. Have you been to any meets?

Sorry, that's not mine, I just copied the photo from above. I've got the same wheels, but they're going on a Mk IV.

The wheels on the Golf are probably just regular steel wheels with some hubcap clips mounted to run the smoothie caps. There was a guy on TDI Club that put old Beetle hubcaps on his New Beetle steel wheels just by installing the clips. I can't seem to find any pictures, I know he sold the car a short time ago, but it was a fairly straight forward operation.

most of the whitewall tires are actually fake. They are just a white piece of plastic or something (not exactly sure, sorry) that you mount on the rim before putting your tire on and the bead keeps it in place.

^^^ Those are portawall's, and generally they look like ass. Eventually they tend to wrinkle and don't fit against the tire properly.

Diamondback makes them the right way. From their website...
"We use a process known as Vulcanization. Vulcanization is a process by which two pieces of rubber are permanently joined by temperature, time, & pressure.

White rubber has nothing to add to the strength of a tire’s sidewall - it is purely ornamental. Therefore vulcanizing the whitewall on while the whole tire is being cured, or whether it is added later makes no difference. Our system allows us to offer an infinite number of tire sizes and whitewall widths, and it also allows us to very closely monitor our quality control. Since we use only tires produced by major manufacturers, our problems with balancing, traction, irregular wear patterns, excessive weight and noise levels are virtually non existent."

Yea, it's kinda strange but I guess it's good if you decide to change your look up after a short while, just remove and voila.

Sounds like Shane knows his stuff though, I admitedly, don't.

                  Re: White walls!!??

I got an email back today from Wheelmaster regarding the radial whitewall pricing. This is what Darryl had to say...

"the 205/55r16's are a Firestone HR or Dayton HHR , H rated, 1279 lb. load rating 1 1/4 '' white wall @ 290.00/ea plus gst"

Needless to say $1300 + after intall and such is a little much for tires that I will likely wear out after two summers. Like the saying goes you gotta pay if you wanna play. If you wanted to look into the portawalls talk to Concept 1.

Thanks bocefus. I might not have them for this season now. I'll have to see what all of my options are before I decide...I still have my kitchen reno to deal with first.

Cups are nice but very common, mostly on MK1 and MK2s though.
