going for the smoked look? Always better to buy a real set then do it yourself but with some careful work it can be done. Search the tex for some good threads on it. But it is a little tricky to seperate the glass and get a good seal when its done.

throw 'em in the oven - it works quite well. That glue softens up pretty quick.

Yeah i saw a write up on vw vortex, put in the oven masket off and paint all the crome flat black, but it sounds kinda risky!

i was thinking about it, either black or body colour, because i had to open mine up to clean out some dust that got in there and I buggered up the chrome finish. The oven thing was actually pretty easy (but yeah.. ya get a little nervous doing it.)

It's called Joey mod on vortex, and it's fine as long as you follow the directions. Many have done it, even with OEM HIDS (big balls).

Yeah it looks easy for jetta head lights but the GTI head lights (non hids) look a bit more tricky.

Is the glue any different on the HID's? I'm pondering putting new front covers on.

I know what you mean about the big balls. I'm currently trying to grow some to build the courage to crack open my OEM HID's to joey mod them.......20th style.

ps. OEM HID's are alot more difficult to open compared to NA headlights.

My car is black (BMP) and I want to keep the smoked theme. I don't think clear headlights will go with the flow of the rest of the car. I've had my brand new OEM HID's sitting in my room for the last 8 months.

yes glad press and seal is good. Check the DIY/FAQ thread on Vortex for all the info on joey modding. I didn't have hours to waste doing mine so I just GLI'd mine (ie: 20th AE style). Painted the outer chrome ring black only. Looks piomp.

i believe HID's are harder to seperate then NA lights. i'd like to color match the outter ring of mine.

I've done it....I'll have to do it again after my car gets back from the bodyshop.....not hard, doesn't take balls, just man up and do it....too me half an hour tops to pull em off apart paint and reassemble.....ask Klobi...he was there!
