  • Just what I need for Das Volks

    Hey guys and gals,

So on friday I had my tranny die, so I paid alot extra to get it rushed to be ready for this weekend. Thought all was well.

I had a fire under my dashboard today! Had to put it out with my hands.. that was fun.. HOORAY!

Ok I have found the source of the problem, my gauge cluster wiring has caught on fire and melted, now all the bare wire is touching each other in this clump. Any ideas on what caused this and how I can fix it? I think my gauge cluster is fine. I took it apart and didnt see anything wrong with it. I think its a short in the fuse panel. Or I need to run another ground wire back to the battery.

    Any ideas?

Heres the melted gauge cluster wire.

    Here is a big mess...

Does anyone have a site that shows the corrado recalls? Or does anyone have a list as to what slot gets what amperage of fuse and whatnot? because I dont think there should be any 45 amp fuses in the fuse panel... damn the previous owners!

remote starter/ alarm wiring issue maybe???
    looks like a mess there

There may be signals tapped off that harness which shorted to ground.
Check the wires that are melted (too much current went through them)
Just because you don't see any visible damage doesn't mean there's no problem in the cluster. Check for shorts on those melted wires.

45A fuse?? maybe it's for the car starter

just a few things to look at, good luck and post progress
    put.......put.......

Well the melted wires are definently shorted out. and it was initially the ground wire that melted the rest of the wires in that mess. too much current went thru it. I'm calling every shop I can today to see if I can get a diagnosis.. so we will see..

I used to have a WHOOOOOOOOLLLLEE bunch of corrado wiring diagrams (I once had a similar issue) I'll have to see if they are still around, they be only for the G60 though (that looks like a VR6 cluster). If I get time i'll look. Good luck, it's times like this I don't miss my rado.

Yea this is a Vr6, but I would still appreciate it.

Most of the shops I called this morning wouldn't even talk to me after I told them it was a Corrado, they said they couldn't do it with without diagrams.

Regardless, I got it into a place today, and im paying out the ass to have them rush it to me intime for tonight or tomorrow. So if they cant fix it, then I might be S.O.L.

Yea, paying a shop to diagnose electrical problems isn't usually a good idea but I can understand that you want it fixed quickly.

If you want to start digging through google "Corrado drivability issues" that's usually a good start. Also, the corrado club of canada used to have some pretty good info posted up on their site.

Thats ok, I already found the problem, it had rubbed itself enough on the steering column "shield" and eventually soildered itself right to it and burned up. I just have to replace the harness.

And yes I frequent corrado club of canada..

soooo through all the forums I got enough info.. The shop is just rebuilding the harness for me so I dont have to pay out the ass for a dealership item.

excellent well glad you found your issue. My issue was a grounding strap that cut through my wiring harness next to the firewall, the end result was much the same as yours. Well just replacing the harness shouldn't be too bad then.

I remember you saying you were on corradoclub.ca just thought I'd mention looking for your info there as I found some good stuff there back when I was stumped.

Corrados are bad for the ignition switch wiring breaking and shorting out. It's the tilt that causes the chaos.
