  • Car Seat safety in VWs (possible repost)

    Hi guys,

I remember a post a month or so back about the installation of car seats into VW's....? There were some links posted, and usefull info specific to VW, if memory serves?
I tried searching for that thread, to no avail.

If anyone has this info, please repost. The "little one" will be here in 4 weeks!

Volkstech can show you the way this can be done by the book. He has two little ones (my nieces) which are getting bigger and bigger every day!!

You could always pop by South Centre Fine Cars, ask for Alice in Service, she's certified for Child Seat stuff....sorry, can't remember the exact designation.

Yep as Paul said 70% of child seats are installed incorrectly. It would be our pleasure at SCFC to look at any or all car seat installs.

I know this is an old post and I am sorry for the bump up... but does anyone know if SCFC still offers this service?

I have been having a heck of a time getting the child seat fit right in the Jetta and I am worried that I am doing it wrong.

                  Thanks a bunch!

Re: Car Seat safety in VWs (possible repost)

i had to go buy a different rear facing seat. the one I had said it was only to be installed with the carry handle back in line with the back of the seat, and with it there, there really wasn't enough room, even with the front seats crammed forward. The one I have now say it wants the handle all the way up in carry position, or all the way down (like where it supports it as a chair on the floor). In these positions, it fits fine. The handle is also less bulky on the one I have now.

Do check the manual though. Things like where the handle should be are different chair to chair, and when you ask someone, you usually get "it ALWAYS has to be this way", which may not be the case for your chair.

For rear seats, the car seat mounts under the back seat are great (in the 99+ models).. Way nicer then having to use the car seat belt all the time.

I think one of the things that gets missed is that your seatbelts have a ratchet mechanism for baby seats that only works if you pull it out all the way first and let it 'click' back in.

Don't know if the dealers still do the checks. I don't think the fire department will anymore. Too much liability. Basically, you get fined if you do it wrong, but hardly anyone will show you how to do it right.

For the most part if you have a new car and read the instructions you will be fine. Some seats have a level line where you have to adjust the bottom base to set them right. I have found some seat fit better then others, it all depends what you are putting them in. I haven't heard about the seatbelt setting before, do you have any idea what it actually does?

is that seat belt Q about my post? If you pull the belt all the way out, it sets the seat belt lock on (same as hitting the breaks, but this way the lock stays on). So you can belt in the car seat, and pull the belt tight, and it stays tight. Once you let it retract all the way, the belt lock goes back to normal. Most, if not all newer cars do this.
