      What are coil packs?
The 1.8t motor has a slightly different ignition system than most of us are used to, replacing the more traditional distributor and ignition wires are coilpacks. Coilpacks sit directly ontop of your sparkplugs and are located directly underneath your engine cover. You need to remove your coilpacks in order to change your sparkplugs. Coilpacks work in much the same way as a traditional ignition system in that they power up the sparkplug to create a spark and transfer potential energy in the head into kinetic energy through combustion. In general many people have had certain problems with their coilpacks, chalk it down to improper sparkplug gapping, faulty modules or a host of other conditions. There was a running change in late 2000 where the coilpacks were redesigned and the manufacturer changed.

basically, newer 1.8t's often have failing coilpacks which result on the car only firing on 3 cylinders instead of 4.

your 24v might blow a coil paul but not necessarily.. our 1.8Ts 02's and below had coil problems out the ass hence the recall.. my 03 is supposed to have the new 'j' versions that are proper and stuff so.. i never asked but i assume they are..

ps.. paul troll vortex like a mofo in the 24v tech forum and you will learn a ton about your engine.

And if you want to get technical (and accurate), 1.8Ts have ignition coils (1 coil per cylinder), where VR6s have coil packs (1 for each bank of 3 cylinders).

Nice info! My car is a 2003 but looking at the production date it was assembled 08/02 .... and had the "h" version coilpack. After they switched the faulty coilpacks the car doesnt idle weird anymore and because it was misfiring before it feels much better now.

Also thanks again to Peter and Simon for their diagnostic through the cell phone =P

I bought my car from Northland and I like that. I like that a lot!!

My car is an 03 as well and build date is sometime in late 02 (can't remember off the top of my head the exact date) but I 'd like to know if you can tell the version just by looking at it or exactly when the J version was put into production.

My coilpack just went this morning... Not very happy. My Passat is now sitting at Fifth Ave. Hopefully they will be able to fix it today.
