  • Beer involved, looking for help.

Hey guys... just picked up a "new" rust free hatch for my mk3 golf... went to put her on today and lo and behold the place where I live (didnt bing any of my tools with me) doesnt have a complete socket set or even tool set in order for me to take off the old one and put on the new one .... also decided its more than a one person job cuz I dont want to drop this thing on my head or the ground for that matter... so after this lengthy explanation, lets get down to business.

I'm looking for some people to help me out with this, would need to bring some tools so we could do it... I will supply some beer for those involved. send me an email @ evil_hippyrx7@hotmail.com or give me a call at 13067376606 (my sask cell) so we can work out a time. Looking to get it done by friday evening or saturday evening cuz I'm going back home on Sunday for a week.

edit or has anyone ever successfully put a hatch door inside their hatch? (doesnt seem possible to me, but you know)

We have mod days on weekends but you should probably post where in the city you are located - if you are nearby I'm sure anyone here would help out. But 20 bucks in gas to drive out to Arbor lake from Coperfield. :P

Also I think Autozone will rent for free basic tools.

Jester (Jeff) and I will be doing the hatch tonight. Hes going to give me a call around 6:30. One more body would be nice. all you have to do is sit there and hold one side of the hatch. If you're interested/willing to help a dubber out give me a call around then.

Re: Beer involved, looking for help.

Well guys initial try was a failure... didnt think it would be that hard to remove a hatch and install a new one. First off thanks to Jeff for coming out. Now, a 11/32 socket fit perfect, like the white glove on OJ.. well that glove didnt fit but the socket was tight. Problem was, neither of us had 1/4 inch driver, 3/4 in was not going to fit at all... so Jeff being a great guy goes to Sears and buys a 1/4inch driver... comes back... just a wee bit too big.. and he heads on back to sears.. buys a 11/32 combination wrench (1 box end and 1 open)... open end fits but was going to round the head of the bolt (these are some messed up looking bolts).. box end was too loose... so we quit.. and I'm going to have to tackle this another day. still looking for help if people want... also need to track down a vaccuum line for the new hatch or find a way to remove the old one in order for the vacuum pump for the locks to work....

story over.. new one begins.. going to give this a shot possibly tomorrow or thursday or even friday during the day as I have class Fri night. Let me know if you're still willing to help.

Jeff didnt even want a beer after all his hard work, what a guy. Anyways, I got a 12 pack of Keiths that I'm willing to split with whoever helps... may possibly buy more if I can scrounge up some cash.

You'll likely need a metric size. If you find out what kind I may be able to dig one up as I have a bunch of metric sockets in 1/4" drive.

yeah, nothing imperial on these cars... Easy on the bolts, cause grade 8, or any kind of stainless metric bolts are hard to come by.

If you have nothing to do on a saturday go to Canadian tire and ask someone for a metric bolt, it's good times.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Tried metric and it was still too loose. 8mm was to small and 9mm was to loose. 11/32 fit the best. and 1/4 inch drive and socket wont fit in the space between the roof and the actual hatch. i think its going to require a box end wrench cuz the open end just wont work.

I know the bolts on a MK4 hatch are a inverse torque type so that maybe your problem.

Well 8mm box end wrench worked but the 8mm socket is to small.. so right now I have no hatch.. waiting for the roomates to get home so they can hold it while i bolt her down. Also old hatch didnt have an electronic release or vaccuum pump for the release so I spent my entire afternoon rewiring the new one and transfering stuff across..
