    Re: Radar Detector talk

yea.. thats messed up, cause they are legal in bc. i've been stopped in bc with mine on the dash before. ICBC specifically says the detector isn't covered by insurance if you crash and break it.. but thats about the only rule. Oh, I dont think you can have them in a commercial vehicle either. Maybe the cop had just transferred from out east... I find it odd that BC RCMP would carry RDD's, for sure most do not.

      Re: Radar Detector talk

Arent radar detectors passive devices only? (ie only look for incoming signals, they dont send out anything right?) i can understand jammers etc being detectable but cop car carrying detector detectors sounds a little wrong?
      Eric..

I know someone who has a jammer in his car and he hasnt gotten pulled over by the cops for it...
I dont believe regular detectors send anything out in terms of signals. The only time a cop actually knows is if he sees it.

            Re: Radar Detector talk

they emit a tuning oscillation. they try there best to minimize it, but unless you get a top end detector, they are completely detectable. Even with the top end ones, it seems they are only non-detectable for a year or so, until a new detection technology comes out. The detector detectors are made by Spectre, who make the Spectre I, II and III. I and II are defeatable by most current detectors, III is hard to beat. I think there is only one that defeats it. But yeah, although it they try to make them passive, they never truly are.

as far as jammers go, laser jammers are ok. laser is regulated by health and safety, and there aren't too many rules about it's use. I'm sure you could detect them, but i don't think they are all that common yet. if you try to rig up a radar jammer though, you are encroaching on territory governed my the Ministry of Defense, and will likely get more then a ticket and a confiscation. Radar jammers are not available for sale.

            As far as legality:

i think gonzo got the shaft...

              Re: Radar Detector talk

No idea why they took the radar detector from me. Like I said the officer claimed it was illegal to have in the province or in my possesion. Now my grandfather is a judge in BC and he warned me not to use it cause of a zero tolerance toward them. I used it and got caught. THis was about 6 years ago I believe. No use fighting it. So I let him have it and paid my fine. I havent heard anything since making them legal to use in BC.

Anyway....anyone use the Bel STi. I hear its the only radar on the market that is invisible to ALL radar detector detectors. About $100 more then the Escort 8500/Bel RX. Both of which are almost identical in performance. I think with the travelling I do The STi is my best bet.

i nearly bought the STi because my bel 985 stopped beeping (display was still good). I called Beltronics though and they send me a new speaker for 5$ and i stuck it in and i'm good to go. Beltronics does have great service.

                The BC law:

from: Official Report of DEBATES OF THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY

                HON. A. FRASER:
Dealing with radar detectors, I would just like to point out clearly that it is not government policy to ban radar detectors. They are quite legal in British Columbia under the Motor Vehicle Act. I want to make it abundantly clear that that's government policy, and also in the regulations of the Motor Vehicle Act....

Thats a bit dated, but i did a search of the current BC Motor Vehicles Act, and it does not mention restriction.

                  My $0.02 worth:

My ancient Whistler 1490 is still a beast on the highway. Lots of warning of upcoming Smokies and very effective. Although, I would still heavily encourage the use of a "Rabbit" for those of you that regularly drive in the 130+ range. With Instant-on out there and the possible occasional laser tripod as you get close to a city/national park... its really just a matter of time until you're doin' the F*ck&N' C*#k S&*K@% ....!!! ...as you stare at what is likely going to be $100+ less in your wallet.

As for the city... yeah... waste of time. Makes you feel more invincible however... I wouldn't stake my life on it. Best bet is to pick up one of those laser jammers.

                  Cheers... Deuce.

P.S. So... where do I go to get my Laser Jammer (purchase/install) again?
