Re: Synth. oil and filter question

I think you would be able to fell if a Fram filter for a TDA has a smaller surface area as ours are open elements not enclosed like 1.8T's etc. Personally for oil I was using delvac 1 until the price went through the roof and now I am using chevron Duro (I believe that is the one anyways). So far the oil has been great.

All in all, I agree this may not be the best of the best, but I THINK i'm covered as far as spec goes.

Also, the PC Duron oil is CH-4, but is it 505.00?
As I understand it (I could be wrong), the VW specs (505.00) are not test based like API or ACEA, they specify a specific additive package.

What I am getting at is the Platinum is rated API CF and ACEA B4. What tests did it fail to not get CH-4 or E5? These tests are specifically intended for preventing damage to modern diesel engines.

Re: Synth. oil and filter question

i see what you are getting at. In the end, i dont usually let my car go untill 16000km anyways, so I think im safe. On the other hand, I am going to return my Fram filter.. so I may bring back the oil too. Looks like they have the Castrol stuff that meets everything in stock now.

For what its worth, this is what Penzoil said (not that it clears much up):

        Me:

        Hi,
I have a question regarding OEM oil specs. I have an 2001 VW TDI, the VW oil spec is VW 505.00. Pennzoil Platinum 5-40 'Euro' claims to meet this, but this oil does not meet the API CG-4 spec that VW also mentions. Im not sure how these two rating systems work, so what I would like to know is if Pennzoil Platinum 'Euro' 5-40 is the right oil for my TDI (diesel) engine, or if I should keep looking. The right oil should give me about a 15,000km change interval, but if this is not going to do this, I would like to know.
        Thanks for your time,

        Pennzoil:

Dear Mr. Stefan Helmer; Thank you for your interest in our product. You are correct, neither the Pennzoil Platinum European 5W40 nor the Quaker State Q-Diesel Plus SB 5W-40 (the only product we make which meets the VW 505.01specification for diesels) are API CG-4 rated. They are only CF rated. You will have to go to Volkswagen for their oil which meet the 505.00 and the API CG-4.
        Sincerely
        Product Technical Service

        Me:

Ok, that makes sense. Next question would be, since Volkswagen is European, and does not use API as its native ranking system, is meeting the VW 505.00 spec and not the API spec good enough? (i notices that even though pennzoil doesnt give this oil an API rating suitable for diesel, the data sheet says it is good for light duty diesel).
        thanks,

        Pennzoil:

Stefan; The API rating we apply to our oils, both the Quaker State Diesel Plus and the Pennzoil Platinum European is a CF, which as you stated from our Technical Data Sheet is suitable for use in light duty diesels. Should you use either of the VW 505.00 rated oils and experience any problems we stand behind all of our oils providing the proper oil selection and maintenance is followed.

added note.. castol syntec 5-40 is 9.95/L @ NLVW and 13.50/L at auto value. I got the parts counter to leave an order of oil and a filter at their sales desk for me to pick up after work - this was a good learning experience. oem yo.

Where have you guys been finding the Delvac 5w40?
I have heard it changed to Mobil 1 truck and SUV formula...

I have always used the mobil 1 ow40 Euro formula.. but have been hearing great reviews of the delvac and Castrol 5w40s.

Do you think any Mobil 1 retailers would trade a case of 5w30 for 0w30 or 5w40? I pretty much have two cases of it.. Free for being in the DTP booth..

I was buying delvac 1 at Brandon Petrolium which is a little husky(I believe) building just off deerfoot on blackfoot.

I did mine for the first time now that I'm out of warranty - no probs, except getting oil on myself unscrewing the filter.

Still 50 bucks for all the oil and 12 or so for the filter, but beats 100.
