    Re: Changing Brakes.

what year is your car again? at any rate, no impact gun needed... You may need a tool to compress the rear calipers. I find the free rental fromm partsource to be the best bet.

        Re: Changing Brakes.

no.. no c-clamp! they have to be turned as they are compressed (well, the rear ones do) its part of the auto tensioner for the e-brake. You will damage it if you force it in with a c-clamp. I did all 4 rotors and pads to match no problem on my TDI with no impact gun.

there is a little cube tool you can pick up cheap too from cdn. tire, but honestly, the 'proper' tool (that it too expensive to buy for a one shot deal, so free rental is the way to go) is pretty slick. Works for the fronts to, and is less awkward then a clamp.

              Re: Changing Brakes.

i rented the one I used from partsource. they charge you full price, but refund full price when you bring it back. I think its about a 130$ tool to buy. The cdn. tire one is not the greatest. it costs about 5-10$ and is a little more awkward. I'd sent you the link to some pics, but my computer is farked and running in 640x480 with like 3 colours right now. Maybe I can find some when I get this fixed.

I cant really make out the images, lol, but I am pretty sure these are the tools. The top one (expensive one) is the gooder that partsource will rent you (brand may be a little different), and the bottom one is the one you can buy at canadian tire (and probably can buy at partsource too). The expensive one works super easy on front and back.

                      Re: Changing Brakes.

sorry, they work here. i think the canadian tire page defaults to the home page if you dont have the 'remember my language' choice picked when it asks for french/english. anyhow, search brake tools, or:

first is cheap one, second is the set you can rent from partsource

**by the way, the cheaper 'cube' just goes on a ratchet and you twist and push by hand.

i didnt have any problems, so I hope you dont either. Other then the brake tool, i just had to replenish some of my metric wrenches that had walked away over time.

I haven't had to do my brakes yet (80K, still lots of pad) but I've played with other cars. How do you get the rotors off anyway? I assume the pads come out, you raise the caliper then pull it off, then ???
