Finally installed the Sportster in the car properly after getting a Panavise mount. I wish I had a Starmate replay, I prefer the look, but we can't get those here in Canada. Here are the pics, it was an interesting install for a number of reasons. I have the radio playing through a Pioneer AVH-P6600DVD headunit, flip out LCD. This thing takes up some space, so I had to modify the Panavise mount to take the Sportster in the farthest 2 holes only. This way my screen would clear the Sportster when it flips out (whenever I start my car). I had to create a hole for the Line Out cable, and the Antenna cable. I also bent the bracket at a sharper angle. I also left constant power to the unit, that way I can pause the radio, leave my car for an errand, and come back and play where I left off....great for those Stern interviews you just HAVE to hear....
Secondly, the Pioneer units do not take normal Line In cables (RCA)......well, they do, but you need an AI Bus adapter for it. I also have an iPod interface for the Pioneer, and thankfully I bought the one that has the AI Bus Throughput option on it. You can daisy chain as many external devices as you want. I have the iPod adapter, and now the Sirius line out cable too. I unfortunately do not have any of that nice tech wrap yet, so its electrical taped to a single cable, but that will change soon....and I know, my car is MESSY!
Lastly, antenna placement, I didn't want it outside, and anywhere I could see.....I removed my glovebox (have to to get to the brains of the Pioneer anyhow), and placed the antenna up on top of the dash crossbeam, just underneath the dash pad. Our sloping windshields have always been great (my antenna has never been outside), and the fit was very tight so I never have to worry about my antenna slipping loose.....I'll see how my trip through the mountains next week works with this placement....
