  • 1.8T & VR6 mileage question

Those of you that have MK4 1.8Ts and VR6s, what kind of gas mileage are you getting? Please state if it's and auto or std too please.

I'm in the hunt for a 1.8T Jetta because of the gas prices but I'm starting to wonder if the VR would be a good choice as well. I'm having a hard time finding the Jetta that I want so if the VR6 isn't that much harder on gas I might look at those as well.

Please let me know what you all are getting.

    Thanks

    Re: 1.8T & VR6 mileage question

Hmm, if you've no plans to mod the engine the sheer enjoyment of a VR compared to the 1.8 doesn't even compare. If you're going to mod, the sheer enjoyment of a VR still wins...what can I say.

The best mileage I achieve with an 03 6spd 24 valve is about 7.8 l/100 km, that's insane discipline. Hard driving downtown will land you about 13 l/100km. My average per tank with a mix of city and highway typically is just over 10 l/100km.

Let me put it this way, I've put 30,000 km on my car, say the difference is 1.5 litres/100km, 30000/100 * 1.5 = 450 litres over the life of the car so far (2 years of use, bought in the summer of 04). Over that time fuel has averaged roughly a buck, so it's cost me an extra $450. $450 over 24 months is roughly $20 per month. Yes I enjoy the car enough to spend an extra $20 per month. One word...smooth.

5 spd 1.8T chipped getting about 9.2L/100km. Thats not babying it or driving too conservative either.

1.8T 5 speed chipped about 11-13L/100km... definitely not light on the gas.

Best was 6.88L/100, usually around 9.1 to 9.5L/100. I would say a 1.8 gets about 25% better fuel econ.

I get around 10L/100km in my VR, and I'm never light on the gas. On Khyron's estimations, I should be around 12L/100km but I've never had mileage that bad, no matter how hard I drive the car. Maybe I'm getting better mileage from the lighter wheels?

                  Re: 1.8T & VR6 mileage question

10/100 is 23.5 MPG US which is pretty close to epa specs (22/29 vs 24/31). I was going more by observed numbers, such as 1.8Ts managing 35+mpg on highway where the VR can't seem to get over 31.

But yes I'd say better fuel econ is a marginal benefit over the VR - if it's a major focus you should skip both and get a TDI.

Khyron, are those numbers for a 12V or a 24V?

Man that's awesome highway mileage! Wonder what a VR6 would get on the highway??

Now I'm kinda wondering if I should stick with the 1.8T or go for the VR6. The VR6s are cheaper for some reason so that is a plus. Maybe I should test drive each type and get a feel for them seeing as the closest I've been to a newer Jetta is my bro's 06 2.0T

I'd base the decision on a test drive and nothing else...but that's me.
