  • Buying a new VW from a US dealer

Ok so I know the procedures for getting a used car from the US into Canada, but what about a new car from a dealer. Are dealers, in the US, allowed to sell new cars to Canadian residents?

Yes you can buy a new car from the states. Alot of people do it and save quite a bit of money. The issues arise over the Warranty coverage though. Some companies like Subaru will allow your American Car to recieve warranty work in Canada but other companies like Honda will NOT allow warranty work to be performed in Canada. That means driving down to Montana if something gets screwed up. I don't know what VW will do so maybe contact VW of Canada to find out first.

I am trying to find a thread on some forum where somebody purchased a new Subaru from the states and gave a detailed outline of the costs involved. His purchase from the states saved him like $7000.

Here's one similar thread to look at:

Ya the gf is looking at getting a new car from the states. She's got a few quotes and got one dealer from Montana telling her that the Volkswagen franchise doesn't allow them to sell to Canadians without an American address. I thought it was BS but thought I'd see if anyone has tried before and got a similar response.

Yea all warranty issues will be addressed if you buy from the states and bring to Canada. USA warranties are different though. READ THE FINE PRINT!!

I wish. Just sold my Cabby actually, looking to get another one right away. And as for Renata, she's pricing out American Rabbits.

I have been researching this a lot too as my Dad is looking at new Audi's and the difference in price between the US and here is ridiculous.

Ya she got a price that was at least $4000 less for the exact same car. I'm not sure if prices are entirely finalized yet, but dealers have a good idea what they are going to be. So as long as the warranty isn't too big of an issue and she is willing to fork out the cash, we'll be heading south.
