SO im on my way home and I burried the needle on the thermometer and threw a CEL. Thankfully it only happened a few blocks from my place.

For the last 2-3 weeks I've been noticing a rough and sometimes a high (1000 RPM) idle and i've also been noticing that the whine from the belts at idle has been a bit louder than usual lately.

When I got home, i noticed that the rad overflow was quite full and I was leaking a bit of coolant from the passenger right side. the frame parts under the windshield washer reservoir were wet with coolant.

please don't tell me that it's my waterpump... is there any way to diagnose if it is the waterpump? Will coolant leak out from around the waterpump pulley if it's toast?

    Re: overheating

check the CEL code with a vag com, and see if it sheds any light on the situation... water pump is a possibility though.

*you can turn the fans on with a vag com to, just to make sure they are working. i dont think that fan failure is all that common though

      I don't have a vag com, unfortunately.

            Re: overheating

I actually just got a friend to change my water pump and timing belt yesterday!

I was on my way to edm a few days ago when the car started over heating....i first thought it was the thermostat, so i changed that but then when i started driving the car again the heat wouldnt come on. So then i knew it had to be the water pump. I picked up the parts from the vw dealer and while i was changing the water pump i mind as well do the timing belt and make the job 10 times easier. Overall everything went great and the car works much better now. If you have time, order a aftermarket water pump that comes with a metal impeller, and save urself the trouble of fixing it again in the next 3-4 years. But since the OEM waterpump held for 6 years im sure it will hold for another 6.

I drive a 2000 Golf 2.0 with 117,xxx. Hope this was some help to you.
