  • Sterter noise on MK4?

I just found this on Vortex, I thought everyone should see it. Cool Idea, I'm gonna try it to see if it works. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2269482

I have read about this before and the wifes car grinds from time to time so I have been meaning to do it for a long time. I will post it up if I ever get time to do it

Happens to my car all the time but I don't trust my own mechanical aptitude to try it DIY.

It works!!! I had a noisey starter laying around in my garage and I decided to try it. After the procedure I bench tested the starter. No more noise!!! I think I might start doing this at work to save customers some cake.

My rabbit starter gave me issues the other day. Only happened once the whole time i've had the car. My temp solution was to put a hammer in the hatch . I'll have to get a new one in the next few days. Not as technical as this but so far it's been ok.

That would be a good idea Dave! Really though how long do you think this will fix the problem? Are you aloud to ask the customer that you can save them a new starter (which is $400+) but it my possibly not go away for ever?

There were a few guys on Ottawa-vdubbing.com who did this (they wrote up a how-to a few years ago, actually.)

From their experience, the grinding comes back within a few months.

Could try synthetic grease rather than regular. I will have to see if I can do one here at work and see how long it lasts.

Well yes Ryan that would be the case to but if you actually read any part of the thread you would know that it can stick and cause the same problem.
