i went in for my passat seat heater recall and heard a couple of
customers commenting on door rate..so i made some calls and
    it's all over the place.

e.g fifth ave 96.00 per hour
    N.L 98.00
S.C.F.C any where from 65.00 to 105.00 per hour depending on
repair, variable door rate depending on model year or problem.

i guess it's going to pay to make a few phone calls..my cars off warranty end of april.

i think it's time to buy a MK II and take the discounted labor rate
    holy *&%$ 105.00 an hour.

15.00 an hour increase from last year,i'd love to have a raise like that.
and i don't won't to hear we have to buy tools and training cost's go
up..give me a break, thats what warranty pays for.by the time my
car goes off warranty it's all paid for and then some.i feel bad for the
techs because they are the ones that everbody thinks are making the
    big bucks...

    sorry for the rant
but if i'am goint to pay 105.00 0r 98.00 0r 96.00 per hour it better not be an apprentice..rant over...

I was appalled at the 98/hr shop rate at NL.....I would love to meet the person who sits down and says, "lets come up with a shop rate, how about twice what any other place in the world charges....yeah, that sounds good, nobody will ever know any better"

Ugh....I'm just having dealership hate...I agree, I'm gonna sell the Mk4 and go older....if I have to pay for repair costs, I'm gonna do it on a car I can do anything I want to...And I'm thinking VR6 'Rado

      Re: stealership wars

PetroCanada certiguard (take my non-vw beaters there) has a shop rate of over 110/hr. Even c1 is 80/hr if I remember rightly.

You think you have maintenance issues now!

Seriously though, if I was to buy an older car (well, for you, for me it would be much newer) it would be a VR6 corrado or Golf. Probably Golf, I have a love/hate relationship with the Corrado.

I'm dragging this offtopic but rates are def. getting up there, the annoying part is it seems dealerships keep raising the rates and the smaller companies (some not all) follow suit to stay just 10-20 bucks below.

Please don't get me wrong...the last thing I'd like to do is defend the dealership but...

10 years ago shop rates were $75 to $85 bucks...a few things have happened in this city and this country in that ten years that have driven costs up. Average home ten years ago I'd bet was about $160,000, it's over $300,000 now...

Nope, our rate are $89.00 for mechanical, ect. $95. for engine light and electrical diagnose. We as licenced techs are supposed to get paid 1/3 of the door rate. I don't....

You see that is why I buy all my own tools and learn to do everyhint my self. Hell I could blow and engine and replace it myself and it would still be cheaper then going to a stealership in the long run.

Well, my dad is still a liscenced HD mech, so we do most major stuff ourselves....I bought a newer car for warranty.....When I was working in shops, the rates were more like $60/hr....

Rates are High everywhere at shops and the techs deffently dont get it. And there is usually 2 rates 1 for electrical and 1 for regular work at dealerships anyways

I think there is good reason for that, no offence to any techs but I don't think they have the knowledge or tools to diagnose an electronic problem other then just changing a major component. Every story I hear it is just like a TV repair guy, make an educated guess and swap parts till it works. Plus if it is a bad wire or connection, they are on the hook if something goes wrong and it has to be repaired again.

the only thing i have a problem with it that I think its retarded to charge a minimal $95. for a fix that takes 5 minutes. like a ground wire being loose.

I'm Heavy Duty so it might be different and there are some amazing techs that are wizards when it comes to electrical but thats like any job you have good ones and bad ones
