Has anyone installed HID's on their MKIV? If so, post some pics and some prices...I'm thinking of doing it this spring if I can get a decent price. Thing is, I don't know what a "decent price" is. Anyone wanna fill me in?

Would anyone suggest picking up a conversion kit? Also, does anyone know if the 6000K conversion kits are exactly like, say, Bimmer headlights? Maybe a guy should look for a complete HID headlight assembly? What are my options?

            Re: HID Headlights

Don't get a kit, you'll blind all the other drivers on the road. Get the OEM HID, or just put in some silverstar bulbs and call it a day. German E-bay, or ECS tuning would be your best bet for the OEM HIDs.

              Re: HID Headlights

Why do you say that a kit will blind other drivers? What makes it so much different from the OEM HID's? Does the beam from a conversion kit look that much different from OEM's?

                  Re: HID Headlights

It doesn’t actually cost that much more to go OEM and it's guaranteed to work the first time.

Silverstoned: Didn't you find a website that explains why the retrofit kits are not worth the money? I remember reading it.

                    Re: HID Headlights

Yeah, I'll try to find the link later, or you can search on my user name in the forums here. It has to do with the optics of Halogen vs. HID (yes, even halogen projectors won't have sharp enough cut-off for an HID kit). It talks about beam patterns, the difference between HID arc and Halogen filamanets, and other techy-geek type stuff.

Long story short, you need HID projectors, bulbs and ballasts. By the time you shell out for all of that and then modify your stock housings to accept all this, it would probably be cheaper to go OEM. That said, there is a thread running on the vortex in the MKIV section of people who have done HID retrofits to their stock housings using projectors larger than the OEM units. I don't know if bigger is better for HID projectors, I guess it depends on whether you are looking for lighting performance or looks.

I was looking on ecstuning.com, and the OEM's are running for $1299 USD. Pretty rich for my blood. Btw Silverstoned, your last link doesn't work.
