this is a car for crack smokers..

I don't understand why everyone thinks the price is too high. I mean really, when I bought my 99 MK3 GTI 7 years ago it was $29900 plus taxes. My 20th AE was around $34500 plus taxes if I remember correctly. Granted the MK5 doesn't have recaros or 18's but otherwise I think it is good value for the money!!! 6 speed, more power, xenons, 6 disc in dash, independant rear suspension, ABS, ESP etc.. Then again, maybe I just pay too much for my cars!

like i said before, the same car in europe is about $10k more... and you get half the warranty

but you get the nice seats at least.

I think all car prices are overinflated....I mean you get a supercharger, recaros and an LSD in a cheaper cobalt.....based on the opel platform....

Anyhow, onto the GTI, I went and saw it parked outside afterhours, its nice, but the 17's look too small on it, and the cloth seats I sat in in europe are waaaayyy better in terms of bolstering.....It is a damn sexy car though!!

I never have a chance to see one close but I think the price is a little high for the car. Most people have a hard time to find the selling point for this GTI. Is this car about speed, power, reliability or luxury? Oh! You might see the same engine offer on the other platform. No matter how you compare the cost of the GTI here or over in Europe, if the product is proven to be GOOD then you can’t stop buyers getting their hands on. I guess time will tell if VW going to make it with the new GTI. VW has not realized the importance to offer some affordable baseline cars and the 4WD. Who will get your top of the line 4-motion when an Audi A4Q just a couple hundreds more?

IMO the new mk5 looks good.

Wheres my polo GTI?? That would be a nice lower price point car with some great technology (twincharge)......I agree that there is no real variation with these cars, sure theres a base golf, but jeez, thats a big diff.....Think of Acura, RSX, RSX premium, RSX-S type of thing.....Regardless, I'm a badge whore, and I would buy the top model because I would regret anything else, but at least give the option.....

I would imagine the GTI I would buy would be a few grand higher with leather and DSG.... I don't care what anyone says regarding value and how this is a "good price" for a car, I still think that its just too much moola for something that has zero return on it.... Buy that GTI, drive it a week, take it back to SCFC or NL or wherever, and see how much they are willing to give in return for a couple thousand KM's......its called gouging!!

Re: New GTi @ SCFC!! Not sold!

I do agree that car prices are obscene right now and I think some of it has to do with the amount suckers are willing to pay for SUV's and how 'cheap' leasing makes things, however my GTI was $28,750 with all their BS fees and whatnot in 2003. The sticker showed a list price of $32k and change plus my tinting and so forth so to see a new model GTI with way more goodies than the mk4 is not bad, relatively.

Hell, even a reasonably 'loaded' Hyundai Accent starts to tickle $20,000 - and that's just wrong.

Definitely not a cheap car, but it's not really meant to be. I plan on hitting a 4 door in about a year or so (hoping they will change the 18" wheels and maybe give us the good seats in plaid)

Did you know that new Civic Si is $30,200 ?
When it may be a nice car is still just a civic.

Just like Jeremy Clarkson had said.

I was quoted $28,500 for the new Civic Si, out the door with all taxes.
The MSRP on those things is $25,880 which is a about 4K lower than base GTI.

That is generally only relevant if you intend to keep the car for 3-4+ years.
