Re rubbing.. I run a 235 on 8.5 x 18s with the 2" drop on HR race springs for the street and 245 R compounds (generally wider than street tires) on 8 x 17s with little to no rubbing. The camber kit I have in the summer helps the race setup but it is not necessary for the 235s.

Re lowering = bad = somewhat true = not the full story..
I have lots of advise if you really want to set your car up to handle

Re racing, here are my results from last year in my TDi (FSP class) in a 10 point car (allowed 15 so lots of mod room left)

1st in class Western Canadian Motorsports Association Championship
1st in class Calgary Sports Car Club, I believe unbeaten all year.
1st in class Super Slalom In Saskatoon

    2nd in class Canadian Nationals

Another guy on the boards (Pat with a 1.8t) here went with the extreme of non lowering (shine) and I am not sure he was convinced of the benefits when I talked to him about it...esp. as I started beating him after (lots of other changes mind you).

But not until you had the camber plates and the 245's stuffed in there.

The Shine kit is good, its just that the G meter in my butt isn't terribly sensitive. If I can resolve the employment situation soon, I may switch to the Ground Control inserts as I think I need some more spring rate.

On a semi-related note, I have some H&R Sport springs I should get around to selling if anyone wants to go that route.

Absolutely.. there are many things that changed but Mr Shine will have his desciples believe that a lowered VW will handle like crap and wouldnt stand a chance vs. his setup. I dispute that and so it seems would you

8x18's with 225's in front and 8x19's with 245's in rear. Yes, I'd love some advice. What d'ya got?

Re: Bilstein Sports + Eibach Pro-kit

It all depends on what you want.. sounds like you want a good street/track/looks compromise. The H&R cupkit is a really good product for basic suspension upgrade, but this will not give you (as would any combination of livable spring rates) a good balance. If you like your car neutral, a rear sway bar is very very recommend to get you a lot closer to initial neutral handling, however the more you get the front end to roll (here is where the shine kit does things differently) you get a little into positive camber. I found that a large front sway bar really works well for negating this. An ultimate racer would probably choose extreme spring rates to achieve the same goal.

Because of my own personal psyche I find that adjustable shocks are just a little too much distraction as they affect so much.. traction out of corners, braking balance, corner entry understeer or oversteer, corner exit understeer or oversteer... most times on the track I personally think there is much more time to be saved by driving better to the balance of your car on the surface/tire conditions at that time. That being said, many other people are quite able to do this and love adjustable shocks. Pat has Koni's and can probably speak to them. I have bilsteins in my HR setup and love the ride they give especially compared to the FK setups I have ridden in, driven and raced.

In the fronts just make sure your offset is in the 30-35 range and you should have no problems with rubbing. In the rear, you will have plenty of room.

I'm sure that you're all dying to know that I've decided on Bilstein Sports + H&R Sports. Slightly more aggresive with higher spring rate and a 1.5" drop. Probably a better all around setup IMO (better for the track anyway). I think that this is a good starting point. Thanks everyone for the input

Like I said, I've got some used H&R Sports available.... I am in Edmonton though. PM me if you're interested.
