    Re: tranny fluid

i would also like to know. i suppose a standard transmission doesnt get that hot, so at long as it stays sealed, and the fluid stays clean, it shouldn't break down.... but yeah, life seems like a long time.

yeah i understand since its sealed its less likely to get dirty but lifetime woah thats a very long time lol.

also does anyone know if its a good idea to "adjust shift linkages" some people say they do it every couple of months

I changed mine at 65K - nothing is lifetime, and it was cheap.

I used GM syncromesh (AC Delco) from a local GM shop - can search for "syncromesh" if you want the threads.

            Re: tranny fluid

There's 10+ page threads about syncromesh, but as I read them all, I went with it. Less notchy, but I never had any grinding in the first place. Very popular with VW and Hondas, with most reporting improvement, less grind.

Personally I will be changing mine every 60K or so, with the AC Delco/GM sycnromesh (about 10$/bottle). It is the same as Penzoil syncromesh if I recall.

Make sure you get the right one though - there's a race style one and a normal one, get the normal. You can buy the special adapter to open the drain plug or just buy the stuff and pay the dealer 15 or 30 mins labour to do it and dispose of it. You'll need 2 1L bottles if they don't drain out every single drop (capacity is 2.1L I believe).

              Re: tranny fluid

I almost have 200,000 KM on my Mark IV golf havent changed the tranny fluid yet but want to soon. The thing I've noticed is that when changing gears it's a little "notchy" and it's really bad when it's cold outside. Seams like the clutch and every thing feels a little better after a couple of KM's of warm up. I'm sure that the fluid change wont help it that much but it cant hurt

May seem like a dumb question does this go for automatics too? I'm at 53K now Just waiting on the huge money cruncher of tune up etc.. at 60 or is 65 k. Volkstech knows.

                  Re: tranny fluid

I think at about 80,000km - 100,000km is the right time to be changing transmission fluid. As far as the automatics go, use VW fluid.
They say it's lifetime, but some argue that they consider 80,000km to be a vehicle's lifetime.

check out this thread about my fluid.

In my opinion it was worth doing.

YES I remember that thread well now, thanks for reposting it Guy.

My brain has been mush since September with my Mom's health and all the Work hours I have been putting it. To the point I'm now sick with a sinus infection and cough.

Thank you for the gentle reminder!
