AUBURN HILLS, Mich. / WOLFSBURG, Germany - DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group and Volkswagen will develop and produce a new van for the North American market. The vehicle is to be marketed under the Volkswagen brand. A corresponding agreement will be signed at the Detroit Motor Show.

Production of the Volkswagen minivan, which will be based on the next generation Chrysler and Dodge minivan will begin in 2008.

“This an important and groundbreaking decision for the Volkswagen brand in the USA”, said Wolfgang Bernhard, Chairman of the VW Brand Board of Management. “In the Volkswagen product range we are missing a van for families, which meets the specific requirements of our American customers. With this new vehicle we are going to enter another important market segment with our own product.”

"This is a win-win deal for both the Chrysler Group and Volkswagen," said Chrysler Group President and CEO Tom LaSorda. "With our manufacturing and platform engineering flexibility, we can deliver a high-quality product specifically tailored to Volkswagen's customers' tastes with little or no substitution effect on the current Dodge and Chrysler minivan lineup.”

That's a terrible thought. Honestly, VW has enough platforms, why does it need to share with Chrysler? Why don't they just bring the Sharon or whatever it is to N.A.? I'm all for a VW van (probably wouldn't buy one but it's about time they got with it) but on a Caravan platform? They are one of the worst for reliability. I guess we'll see.

A polo I would buy, a polo/neon I wouldn't. I can't see a "VW fan" buying something shared with the neon platform (yes, I know it's fast), especially if it's "a neon with a VW badge".

edit: that being said, the neon platform is pretty deadly. My bro has an "sx2.0" (aka: a neon) and its pretty fun in the corners...not so much fun on the highway mind you

ya screw, why would vw agree to make a neon/polo and not just their own polos, thats gay. same with the van too, they have their own vans.

I have mixed feelings about this.

I have just gone through the whole minivan thing as we are expecting our first child, and my business is expanding to the point where I need more cargo room to get to shows. I looked at a Passat wagon, but it was just not big enough, and was resigned to fact I would have to get a minivan. I think that minivans are the anitchrist, and are littering our roads along with SUVs, but for me it was a nessecary evil. Luckily, we comprimised & got a Chrysler Pacifica, which I love. This is the first non-VW I have owned. If VW had something that met my needs, then I would have bought it, but I had to look elsewhere.

Secondly, this may be a positive for VW and bring more people to the brand who otherwise would not have. VW does not have to worry about being precived as lesser quality, lets face it in the minds of many they are the most unreliable vehicles on the road. For a domestic automaker DM is doing some things right, especially compared to Ford & GMC.

I think overall it is a positive for the VW brand, although it likely wont enthuse many VW enthusiasts.

Now, just waiting to see what this may look like.

I honestly think they are doing this because they know they are missing out and can't get it together to bring one of their own vans over (or for that matter from Mexico where all the other VW's are made anyway!). By the time they get one here the market share will be gone.

Well, on the plus side, chrysler hasn't been fu**kin around lately. Ive driven a crossfire and its an alright little car, id never buy it but the build quality is there, pacifica's are supposedly really solid vechicles as well..


basically...what im trying to say is...they could have partnered with ford

There is no more Neon. There is no more SX. There is no more SRT-4.

The only place where that chassis is even used it with the PT Cruiser and that is going away next year when the PT gets a mega-makeover.

There is a model that is being 'inserted' in to the market place in the place of the Neon/SX, called the Caliber, but it appears to be uninspired crap and there is no immediate replacement for the SRT-4.

I'll tell ya what would slay the market - a Magnum Wagon with the Cummins Turbo Diesel in it. OH YEAH BABY.

See with the departure of the Neon that leaves a large gap in the Chrysler lineup as the Calibre is bigger and weirder so that makes this new small car venture needed maybe for both companies as VWs keep getting bigger too!

The simple truth is that when businesses work together they share costs and reduce risk and this can mean more profit or less loss so I just hope the products they come out with are not too horrible, but I know I will never drive a minivan no matter what badge is on the front.

I gotta say, I am suprised by the interior of the Pacifica. The only problem I have is the lack of backlighting on many of the control. No where near my Jetta with all the little backlight vents etc.
