  • Do-It-Yourself Remote Starter

    Hey everyone.

Anyone know anything about ProStart remote starters. They sell them at Canadian Tire. My wife bought one for me for my birthday. Thing is it's a self-install type deal. I have a 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg w/ Manual Transmission. After having read some of the other forum topics regarding remote starters i'm a little worried about trying to install one myself. What's everyone's take on this? Should I even try?

I say not a chance in hell, simply because you have to wire a spare key to bypass the immobiliser. Even with the proper kit and parts, it's a 8+ hour job, let alone trying to ghetto rig it with some all in one package.

Read the box and see what it says about cars equipped with immobilisers.

As a VW dealer tech for years I say don't bother unless you want a crap load of brain damage down the road. i.e. no start conditions, MIL's and stuff not working right. I have seen even the slickest installs go amuck because of stuff they have to wire in to OEM harnesses. Again I say don't bother.
