Cold weather Fuel economy?

I've got 2006 Jetta TDI. I have been tracking fuel economy since purchase end of May and typically get about 6.0 L/100km. My last tank was 7.0 L/100km. No change in driving habits with the exception of the temperature I have been driving in.

I do let it warm up longer know than before, but didn't think I was sitting idle that long.

Thoughts?

Other notes: 18000km on the Odometer, stock, all suggested mainenance done by dealership.

Mileage usually does decline in winter as the car is working harder, my Smart has gone down and it doesnt even keep me that warm.

1) Winter diesel decreases mileage.

2) Cold starts = poor fuel mileage while warming up. Buy an inline coolant heater, it will help this part out, but will alternately cost you in electricity.

3) Slower, stop/start driving in winter.

When the computer reads low intake temps and lower coolant temps it will, in gas and diesel, toss in some more fuel. Also you are getting a greater density of air in the engine with a similar throttle position.

Combine this with warm-up periods, the MTBE hurl they put in the fuel as a freeze inhibitor and that the fuel does not atomize as well when colder and you can easily see how there could be a drop in economy.
