  • MKIV Wheel Help

Ok folks, the xmas bonus is in. Shopping for wheels for my MKIV Golf. My question is regarding offsets and sizing. I'm looking at 18s, haven't nailed it down much farther than that. I need to know:

    1) What width should I be looking for? (I've been looking at 8.5") What happens if I go too big?

    2) What offset? I know stock is 35mm, what happens if I go bigger? (ie 42mm?)

To give you an idea, I'm looking at either the RH-Allurad AO-Phoenix or the Axis Mod se7en Silver. If there is a wheel similar to this you think I should look at, post away!! I'm not set on 18s, 17s maybe, but I think I'd be nutz to try and run 19s in Calgary. I'm definately looking for either a silver or polished wheel with a polished lip.

    thanks in advance!!

lol no dice on the pheonix as those are my old wheels and james has them on his jetta right now

you want at least 18x8.5 they'll sit flush that way up front and pretty decent in the rear

offset 35et is optimal.. 42 will make them actually sit in more.. 30 would make them stick out more kinda deal you get it

tires 225/40/18 is what you want for 18x8.5s

What is your budget, color of your car, perhaps we can suggest some similar wheels. Also those two wheels are quite different in terms of style IMO. So hard to suggest. What kind of look do you want overall?

Width can go as high as 8.5 in the front (max) at stock offset or you will hit your fenders. In the rear you can go 9.5 or something like that without issue. I personally like only 8" width in the front (for handling) but would press it to 8.5" if I could get the extra 0.5" in a deeper dish. I think Boy Racer would say that on the track, wider is always better for cornering, but I don't like the feel.

Ryan flew the Phoenixes for a while I think. I really liked them but I think most people found them to be underwhelming - definitely a fairly subtle or hard-to-notice look versus an aggressive look. Look best on a dark car IMO.

On the other hand, the se7en is going to be more noticable since it is a more aggressive and tuner-styled wheel (I think).

17's are too small, you will never be happy. 18 is a compromise. If you are doing this chiefly for looks and plan to run the wheels only in the summer by all means go to 19's, there is nothing that looks better.

        1) Width should be fine, I think you can even run 9" wide depending on offset and without coilovers.

        2) 42mm will actually bring the wheels In to the car, if you want them to poke out more you would want to run a lower number (ex: 30, or 25).

I think with a mk4 if you're gonna spend good coin on wheels you should def not go smaller than 18 or there is just too much tire and they don't look good.

Also, if you do wheels and you're not lowered I think you will be dissapointed with how it looks. I would almost say do suspension first.

          Re: MKIV Wheel Help

9" in the front hmmmmm. My former glorious supermeshes were really close to the fender at 8.5".

If you change the offset maybe you can run 9", I dunno.

Also AFAIK the Se7en Mod is discontinued.

yea no dice on 9 up front that would be pretty wide.. 8.5s sit plenty flush

if you want a sick wheel that nobody has yet.. check out the axis penta 19x8.5 et35
and you can get them local from bob @cms

              Re: MKIV Wheel Help

I love mesh wheels but I am not a big fan of the Penta, as I think it looks kinda cheap, and mesh wheels are supposed to look expensive. In particular, the fake "bolts" look REALLY fake in this 1-piece wheel, I think axis used to do a much better job with that in their older wheels. Also has kinda soft-edges which I do not like in a mesh, I like it to be a little flatter overall.

Plus djstorm does not seem to be a mesh kinda guy based on his other choices. If you want a GOOD looking mesh wheel, I would get Rial Daytonas, they are the best looking for the money by FAR.

PS sorry to hijack this with mesh wheels, but just not sure what kinda look you want, do you like 5 spokes or more spokes, more open, more closed, old-school, tuner, luxury, etc.

Well I wasn't poking, but I was flush at 8.5" 35mm in the front. Far from flush in the back of course.

I'm not really looking for a mesh wheel, I'm looking more for a six or seven spoke with lip - how can you say these two wheels are that different? Maybe you were thinking about the original axis se7en, the mod se7en is different...here's what I like...damnit - images won't post...

Yea, and if you're gonna poke in the front, you gotta go staggered or it looks (what's the word this week? ah yes) Wiener

                            Re: MKIV Wheel Help

One is a 10 spoke with a satin finish and soft edges, the other is a 7 spoke with hard edges. I definitely see a big difference but maybe it is all in my head. The Se7en imo is going to stand out way more, and will look very aggressive compared to the somewhat reserved Phoenix.

I am far from expert in this style of wheel. Maybe look into some Japanese brands since there are a lot of 6/7 spokes. Volk makes some nice ones!

Edit: That "decade" is new to me, the finish sure looks nice in the photo. Has some potential I think on a silver or black car. Axis Phin has some potential too IMO

                              ok, this is the RH:

                              This is the Axis:

That was way more stress then it should have been. I suck at this. anyways, going on a Black 4 door golf, lowered with H&R coilovers, so I can adjust height to fit wheel.

Now, could I run a wheel with a 42 offset if I used wheel spacers?
