  • Let The Fun Begin

Collecting parts for my 16vT project has begun. I bought a cylinder head off eBay for $51 and a valve cover for $1. Hopefully I’ll have all of the parts by summer, but I’m in no hurry with school and all. I’m going to get the head ported and polished, 3 angle job and new valves. I was thinking of a T3/T4E turbo, not sure what compressor trim or turbine housing yet, I’m open to suggestions. Also an equal length tubular turbo manifold. Then all the other bits to go with it, lots of parts collecting ahead of me…

I'll keep the thread updated with progress.

The T3/T04e 50 trim is the best of the bunch IMO. Specifics depend on if you're looking for more up top or more down low. On a 16v I would guess the 50 trim is going to flow enough for ya even with a smaller turbine side and lighter stage I wheel...

Anyway I think the 50 trim is nearly always a better choice than the 57, and if you are going smaller than the 50 trim you should probably get a regular T3. You should consider a straight up T3 since they are cheaper, very capable and will spool quicker. It sounds like you're building this on a budget so just an idea.

What are your goals with this beast?

Not necessarily on a budget, just thought it was a good deal with the cylinder head, I want to do things right the first time and leave room to grow with what I get, that’s why I'm in no hurry to get this done.

I have heard that a T3 is a little small for a 16v, but didn’t know about which T3/T4 to look at.

As for goals, Id like to see over 200hp.

I hate to ask, but were there no 16v heads over at pick your part? Although, for $51, who cares!

The couple times I've been there, if there was a vw, it was pretty picked clean. So I didn't really bother looking in any junkyards.

Yup, going in the GT, I'm going to get everything I need (Head, Turbo Parts, Management, Transmission, etc) and do it all at once.

Crazy. I would think 200 hp would be pretty easy to achieve, on a turboed aba 16v. What management?

Yeah 200 whp is easy and I am certain a T3-60 or super60 can get a 16v there! I would guess a 60 trim T3 running 10ish psi will get you in range of your goals. I think that is what killa ran on the 'tex on his 16v and made 220 whp? I cant remember, I dont really read 16v threads much.

I would also say if you do look into T3/T4, you should stick with the 50 trim or smaller. You would be able to run more conservative boost levels with a T3/T4 for your 200whp goal, but streetability will be worse for sure.

The other turbo I would look at for a little more money is the GT28R (not RS) which is easy to come by and is very sweet for this kind of project. Plenty of them are available used too if you want to go that way. It actually flows a little less than a T3 Super 60, but would be very very very street friendly. This is the turbo that chad (above) runs. Although it would behave differently on a 16v project vs his 1.8T of course.

Anyway, can't wait to see it come together.

Good call on the 28r, Kris. Linear power, and fairly quick spool. Perfect for the street, if your not after big power. New, they are not cheap, around 7-800usd. But find someone who is upgrading their apr stg3 to a stg3+.....

                        Yup, going in my jetta.

I didn't want to set hp goals to to high, 200whp would be double what I have now. 250whp would be really cool.

Thanks for the turbo sugestions, I was also looking at the gt28r and rs, but was looking at the T series since there a bit less expensive. Why wouldn't you choose the rs? Also, what turbo would give me the most room to grow?

I was looking at 034efi, but management is a long time away.

Yup, replacing the 8 valve head with the 16v one.

Looked into what turbos best suited a 16v, looks like a gt28r would do the job pretty well. Can you get them none gated?
