Re: Buy a Jetta 2.5 or Civic LX? Please help...

My 2c... after working for a VW for 7 years and just recently moving to Toyota, VW definatly has NOT got the reliability of some of the Jap cars. But that said they were really carefull when releasing the A5 Jetta. They wanted every little issue looked after right away to prove they can build a good car again (like they used too). If you are comparing a civic or any jap car to a VW check all the details, the trunk trim, headliner, plastic quility etc. you cannot beat a VW for that. The 2006 Avalon i pdi'ed the other day has a cheap feel to the carpet etc in the trunk compared to even a cl golf! I personally think driving 90% of Jap cars is so boring. They are like an appliance (reliable but boring). I ordered a 05 jetta right after i saw the A5 because it looked to much like a Corrolla and i love it. I cannot see my self trading it for a Toyota anytime soon. Talk to vwsalesguy and take one for a rip right after the civic, it will be waaayyyy quieter on the highway etc. Overall the VW is a more solid car, but what do i know i now fix Yarises!

so im a teck at a vw dealer in red deer and have been a ech at honda a couple of years back for the 2001 /2 models and i will tell you this .....the honda from 90-00 are themost reliable car ever .... however . they were built with no cost saving techniques when the 01 was released it was a cheap peice of garbage the car was plasticy the struts were leaking off the truck yuck . they too now required a special semisynthitic oil increasing the cost of maitinace . and had many quirks ..... after i went vw i felt i was going to see all the good things that rember of my familys old jetta ...no problems right ...wrong . the 99-05 vw are plaged with over engineering window regulaters that fail. (not a huge issue but still a dealer trip ) diesels that would cabon up soo bad that the car wouldent run and numerous recalls . however the car was still triple the drive of the honas i was used to working on . now i stll have friends that work at honda and hey feel the new civic is better than the one its replacing but they still think its gunna be a warrenty abuser . the new jetta is byfar the best product launch as far as inital problems for like 30 cars we have sold at our dealer we have had about 4 come back for warrenty nothing huge a door entry light . a oil leak on a diesel
a throttle valve on a diesel and a dipstick recall on the diesel.
i would not sujest the diesel as even vw has desided the pumpe duse is a over complicated desighn and switching to a common ral desighn in tw years . the 2.5 however will be a verry good reliable choice . and vw is by far a safer ride . and any dealer matinace is expensive but that is what keepsthe value of your car up. wich btw jetta has the best resale of any car out there my 2 cents

First of all, this statement is a little to bold for my liking.... Honestly, compared to what....? The same vintage VW..... sure i guess, but we also have to take into account that at this time (early 90's) VW had begun there venture in Mexico and Brazil, long gone where the glory days of Wolfsburg. I will always agree that a majority of the MK3's and early Mk4's are not the greatest. However this thread is not about what was or used to be, this guy is looking for a reason to buy the new Jetta over the Civic, and again i will say the proof is in the drive.

Based on their being only around a 15% difference in the price I would bias my opinion toward whomever had the lowest interest rate.

I got 0.9% on my GTI and with bugger all down my interest costs over the term of the loan are a piddly $2,000-ish dollars.

I'm pretty sure Honda doesn't drop their pants quite that far on their entry level cars.

Ok...I kept my mouth shut and suggested driving the cars...now I've read the latest issue of 'Automobile' magazine. I'm told lots has changed about the Civic...one thing hasn't.

                Good hp number: 197
                Bad torque number: 139?

                Jetta GLI

                Good hp number: 200
                Good torque number: 207

I don't know but a deficit of 68 lb ft of torque is too much to bear for me even if everything else has been improved.

To be fair, the Jetta does have a weight problem, 3360 vs 2860 for the Si....

So 500lbs for 68 lb ft.
