Re: Buy a Jetta 2.5 or Civic LX? Please help...

Remember, when VW says they upgraded the suspension, they basically mean they upgraded it to a system more like what Honda has been using for years, but which was lacking on the Mk4.

I don't know if the stock suspension on the Mk5 is going to impress me if I compare it to other oem suspensions even now. Nonetheless it is at least competitive now instead of dismal.

I know the 2.0T Jetta would destroy a civic in terms of performance, but maybe not the 2.5L.

As for safety, fit, finish, and road feel, I agree VW usually exceeds most other brands in these areas. It is not really a test you can probably do, but at 200km/h the Jetta is going to feel stable while I don't know if you can say the same for other cars in its class.

Also, if it matters to you, other people - buiness associates for example - would probably be more impressed/comfortable in a VW. Not sure who will be passengering in the vehicle.

Edit: Overnight test drive, how can you turn that down? Go call Adam and drive one overnight, then you'll know!

As for speed and power. I have no clue why a 2.5L engine can make only 150hp. At least that is not the real world figures you will see a 2.5L engine is capable to produce these days.

      1. absolutely
      2. VW builds their cars with complicated design(What was the last major issue with your civic that you are not happy about?)
      3. Ding,ding,ding…. 4yrs warranty. Oh. Brakes…hmm… probably yea.
      4. not owning one

5.Better build car? (I will only get the VW build from homeland next time.)

You should really spend sometime to read up people’s comments on vwvortex. If I were you I will pay a little more to get the Civic Si with factory LSD. VW doesn’t offer cars with LSD these days and I don’t know what they are thinking.

Here's a way to decide, forget about stats, forget about opinions, drive them both and decide.

        Good luck.

Exactly! The car that is best for you will sell itself in the test drive.

Thanks for your advice guys! I really appreciated it...
We tired the Jetta 2.5, and we like the Jetta's appearance and safety features compare with the new civic. If the price of both car are the same we will definitely get the jetta... but in it is not ...so, the only concern we have are price and maintenance cost.
So, if you know where we can get a GREAT deal on a new jetta, it will solve our dilemma.

            Thanks guys!

The 2.5l is built with the same philosophy as the 2.slow. A lot of power at low RPM and engine 'geometry' that will last for freakin ever.

The old 2.0 may suck in a lot of ways when compared to some of the high output spinners (Acura K engine, N/A Lancer engine, Ford / Mazda 2.0, Dodge 2.0) but they make some pretty amazing torque numbers down low on a pretty flat curve and they will out last most of the above (except the K series, but that's in a 2x priced car) and do so with consistancy over the life of the motor.

They are also dead simple mechanically so they CAN be cheap to fix if you don't get rolled over a barrel by a dealership.

              Sorry Dave.

The Jetta looks like a Camry whose mother stood a little too close to the microwave while pregnant. It has all but lost most of the Jetta 'lines'. Put the older models in the family side-by-side and it's pretty evident that the new one looks like it was adopted.

Jetta is 22/30 mpg while Honda is 29/38 mpg for fuel economy, and the Jetta is probably also more to insure, so you may want to consider those things when trying to stretch your budget. :(

What about getting a TDI? The reliability would be as good and the economy would be even better... not sure of the price change from the 2.5L to the Diesel.

I think the Jetta is maybe not in the exact class as the civic so you are also kind of comparing apples to oranges. I would say the Accord is a closer Honda?

Absolutely! The civic is not in the same class at all. The MK5 platform moves the new Jetta into a mid size and out of the compact segment. As for insurance, I have an awesome premium even with several speeding tickets (largely due to the safety rating). The cost difference between the TDI and the 2.5 is about $1500. This is why i opted for the diesel, best economy in its class and best re-sale. And as for getting a deal on your new Jetta I welcome you to come see me and we can discuss your price, however i would suggest getting a valid club membership before doing so. Here is the break down for a basic 5 speed 2.5.

                        MSRP $24,975
                        Freight $615
                        PDI $790

Total Retail $26,380 plus tax and admin fee

I would also like to note that you should do a standard equipment comparison between the two, that way it should be an easier decision to go with the Jetta when you compare what you are getting for your $$$$$$$$$

                              My 2.375 cents worth:

I drive a TDI for the mileage livning out of town and commuting down town.. I dislike the maintance costs and all the little things that go wrong with the car. I like everything to work and hassle free. Driving a VW gives you neither.

On the otherhand, any VW is a cooler ride than any Honda unless you step up to an Acura line model.

For anyone old enough to get in a bar, you are too old to drive a civic. THey say "kids car" or more like "punk kids car". (watch the screams over that comment!)

However, if you want a hassle free, low maintenance with lower OVERALL operating costs, get the Civ.

Like Kuhli says, drive both. If you are a driver, you know drivers are wanted. If you are passenger who happens to sit behind the wheel, you will probably like the Civic.

Good luck and I hope there were no injuries in the accident that sent you on this quest for a new set of wheels.

Hmmm, seems that you live in a fantasy world, if I am not mistaken all cars have maintenance costs and nagging repair issues.... Maybe I’m wrong . And to be perfectly honest (IMO) the only thing that is cheap about the Civic is the build quality. However on a lighter note i have not heard form this person about an overnight road test.....
