  • Formula Design Team (yes little fast racecars!!!)

Been a while since I have been around, stuck with a face in the books missing the VR as its hiding in the garage for the winter.

I am involved with the University of Calgary Formula SAE Design Team for the 2006 Season. Some of you may not know much/anything about the program. Basically it is a University Team comprised of undergraduate students who design, build, test and race a formula inspired car at the largest intercollegiate competition in the world.
This year we will be competing at California Speedway in Fontana California, and in the UK at a testing and proving ground.

Some of you know our counterpart Solar SAE as they recieved a lot of attention this year with the big solar car race that finished in Calgary in the summer.

The program is a great way for students to get real world application and experience before entering the workforce after graduation and promotes school spirit and team involvement.

Unfortunatly these kinds of programs are not cheap so we rely heavily on corporate backing both in the form of financial investment and material and time investment.

It is a long shot, but if any members are involved with organizations which would like to join our team and support us in our quest to promote continued education in a fun, and real world application, we would love to hear from you.

We will be taking part in the Santa Claus Parade on Saturday Nov19 through downtown Calgary, so if you would like to come see the car and meet the team please come down. There will be candy and a surprise for the kids, as well as other floats and displays to be seen. Really a great day for the family (barring bone chilling temperatures).

if anyone has any other questions regarding the program, car, parade feel free to post it here or email me at ajarnold@ucalgary.ca
or if any members GO to UofC and want to become involved with the program please give me a shout. We are always looking for more minds and hands, and its a great way to get involved and apply what you are learning. its not only open to engineers (econ student myself)

the car really is a hoot to drive. we use a CBR600F4i engine (from the Honda CBR600).
car weighs 476lbs with full fluids and with the 20mm intake restrictor makes around 80whp, without close to 115whp. thing is FAST. im talking sub 4 second 0-60 times. tops out around 160km/h and pulls like a bat out of hell. closest thing to a formula1 car i know i will probobly ever come.

*mods i hope this thread is okay here, didn't want to make a seperate post in events and gatherings as well*

some pics for those who still have no idea what i am talking about:

these are all last years car, new one is currently in production. chassis just began construction and car should be out testing by march.
