  • TDI "smell" in the garage.

Thanks all for the responses to my other threaad ( "TDI General Questions" ), it helps a lot before dropping a bucket of money.

Clarification on the smell issue... is it diesel fuel smell or oily exhaust pipe smell? My garage is attached and I have kids. I will take steps to minimise running it in the garage, my concern is only with parking.

Outside of that, I think I'll take my chances with coking as #1 ULSD fuel will likely help and if I get dinged a cleaning cost ( BTW Northland VW told me VW will do ONE cleaning under warranty ) then I'll look into a hack.

I've driven one, it's the best bit of fun you can have for the economy.

    Thanks again. Jeff C.

yeah.. NLVW charged me 800$. and it was the first time.
Tell them that you want to be extra sure, and that if they re-embursed stefan for the intake cleaning, that would strengthen your confidence, and seal the deal. (i'll split it with ya...)

Smell is not noticable. You pull in the garage...turn the car off...no smell. Only time you will get noticable smell is when you first start it up but even then the smoke jsut blows right out of the garage and you barely notice it. The smelll is of diesel.
Go with TDI yo, there is a reason that we've got 2 of them in the garage
You should have seen the huge poof of soot that our Mercedes 300SD used to leave on the ground...TDi's are nothing like that thankfully.

I notice the smell when I start up the car when its cold outside. The smell comes into the cab through the vents if they are open. Once the engine is running for about 30 seconds there is no more smell. The smell/smoke is worse the colder it is.

As for the intake cleaning, become a member over at TDI Club, once the dealership refuses to do it for free, learn to clean it yourself. If they're charging $800 to clean them, then you'll save yourself $800
