Well I am not sure I can help you because I don't know how big of a difference you are feeling. My shifter feels a bit firmer sometimes, then if I go wash my car or something, it loosens up... it is a very mechanical system so if there is friction then it will be firm, and if it is clean and well lubricated, it will be loose.

As long as it doesnt feel broken I think its fine. You can take a look under the hood and see if there are any obstructions or any problems with the shift linkages or counterweight.

There is a procedure for adjusting your shifter alignment. The dealership can do it (for a fee) or you can find it in your Bentley manual, or HERE:

Check your transmission mount, there is a plastic bushing in there, they sometimes crack, or you could have cracked the actual mount. You can see the mount under the hood on the drivers side.

                  Re: Gear shifter

So I took it in to the dealership today and they checked it out and said theres nothing wrong with it. They told me they got 3 mechanics to check it out and none of them found anything wrong with it, and said all the other stick shift jettas do that aswell. So my question is for everyone with a 02ish jetta 1.8t..Does your gear shifter have alot of play in it? Meaning is it very very loose? Because mine used to be tight before and felt fine and now its very very loose and it feels like its about to break off. Fifth ave said its normal and all the vw gearshifters do that?

please can someone tell me how tight/loose thier gear shifter is?

or could they just be saying that because my warranty is about to expire in a couple months and then charge me big time for the repair when it actually just stops even going into gear?

                  thanks

                    Re: Gear shifter

I suspect that it has just loosened up a little.

The bushings are really crappy soft plastic and probably wear-in a bit.

If you want your old feel back you can try replacing the bushings but I doubt this will be done under warranty!!!

how much will the bushings set me back? shouldnt be very costly right...the thing is the dealership wont replace anything untill they think theres something wrong with it.they said theres nothing they can do to fix it

thanks for the quick reply man

There really isn't anything wrong, if its just a bit loose; maybe go out into the used lot and shift some of their lot cars to compare.

The bushings aren't sold by themselves - as far as I know you need new cable ends, the ones that attach to the shift linkage/weight. They are probably not cheap. Here is what they look like:

There is a mod on VW Vortex to fill them with lexel to firm them up:

                        Good luck!

I have an 02 and it certainly should never feel like it's falling off. Perhaps visit South Center and ask for Dave - then at least you'll be sure you're getting it straight. I honestly can't see 5th ave actually evading a failing gearbox but when in doubt a 2nd opinion is good.

I am guessing 'falling off' is an exaggeration... I don't know how it could feel like that and still work???
