Hey all, new to the forums. Nismodrifter (a moderator on beyond.ca) referred me to your site for a Alberta based vw club. Anywho, I recently picked up a 1994 Golf CL. I know, nasty 1.8L 8 valve TBI motor. However, its a 5-speed, 2 door, black (and tinted out), and lowered 3"s. I think I can make it into a very decent daily driver. It doesn't start ATM (motor wont crank over), but I figure its the little black box behind the ignition cylinder. I have a friend (drives a 2002 GTi 1.8T) that works at the Red Deer dealership, and he offered to pull the black box out for me tonight. So I just wanted to say hi and make sure nobody was suprised when a newb started asking stupid questions. Oh yea, and if anybody has any performance upgrades they'd recommend (besides engine swap) I'd appreciate it. It seems the Bosch mono-peice of junk fuel injection system on this car is very resistant to anything you throw at it (from what I've read). So, if you know of any SPECIFIC parts you have used on a CL, please tell me. Thanks guys.

Re: New guy
Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I even have my first newb question for you since I've had an hour to work on the car!
The car had an aftermarket stereo and steering wheel installed in it. The owner removed the stereo out of the car, along with the battery. I just threw in a 500cca battery out of my other car, and the alarm went off! So, after disconnecting the battery, I disconnected the horn, then I reconnected the battery (positive first then negative). Whenever I wiggled the negative cable, the friggin' car honks with its alarm horn. After getting the cable tightened down thouroughly (and being deaf from the horn), I tried to get power to the car. The hazard light button lights up when the ignition isn't turned on, and when I turn it off, theres a clicking come from the dash and the door. Whenever I turn the key to the ignition position, the digital odometer comes on for a brief second, then turns off. I was told the car had 270,000kms, but it appears it only has 170,000kms! Anyways, what the crap is up with the car? I think I got the alarm turned off, as it doesn't honk with the battery connected, but is the battery I installed to small to power the electronics? I have no headlights, tailights, or anything. I also don't have a owners manual. Any suggestions? Will the black box behind the ignition cylinder cure these problems as well? Thanks guys, hopefully somebody can help me.

Re: New guy
Just so everybody knows, the car is running! It was just the little black box behind the ignition cylinder for $50cdn. I now just need a battery, and the car is drivable. There is a nasty crack in the glass, but I can get it saftied like that. I'm extremely excited, if it turns out there is nothing else wrong with the car, I might be driving it up to Cochrane for the Kananaskis Rally this weekend.

Woot! Good news! I would still check the door harnesses as a precautionary thing. You don't want to be stuck in K country with a funked car that doesn't start..Like Type 2's? Visit my blog!
