  • Creaking?

I have a creaking/rubbing noise coming from both my front windows when going over bumpy/uneven roads, only when it's a tiny bit colder. When I open the windows, it goes away. It sounds like the windows rocking/moving/rubbing in the weather seals. Any suggestions for a fix? Are they supposed to be lubed or something??

        Re: Creaking?

I have tried everything, from liquid silicon to gummi phledge. Yes I went to a bmw dealer just for that - it's expensive, if you want to borrow some of mine feel free. But they all made it worse. WD40, Pledge, even Gas. I was even considering replacing all the seals.

My suggestion? Leave it alone. Crack the windows a fraction of an inch when it's bad, otherwise leave it. After a year or so, my rubber seems to have finished wearing in or whatever the hell it does and it's much better now that I don't keep conditioning it.

Khyron is right, no matter what we put on at the dealer it made it worse. I found that cleaning them with a wax and grease remover and putting a slight coating of baby powder works good. Any customer that complains thats what we did!

              Re: Creaking?

Mine only started to show the standard VW rattles and squeaks in the last 5000km or so. I should be passing the 50,000km mark sometime this week, and I have owned the car for exactly 3 years now.

                  Re: Creaking?

Mine's an 02 with 65K - I haven't had window creaks at all this year. It's always been dead silent in the winter and it's silent if the seals are wet.

As for selective hearing, Bart said he didn't have creaking windows but when I was in his car I heard them. When the turbo wasn't howling anyway.

Now that I've said this, mine will probably come back!

hmmm....baby powder hey? Where abouts is that applied - right on the edge of the window? Doesn't it make the windows look dirty/powdery/white??

                      Re: Creaking?

Open your front doors and look at the door on the inside where it lines up with the windshield. There is a little strip there and also do the one that is on the body and starts at the hood area and runs to the back (you will have to open the back doors to do it all). If you look at brand new seals they have a white dusty powder on them, once you put some on yours they should stop making noise and no it doesn't make them all white.

                          Re: Creaking?

So if yer sayin' that putting stuff on the SEALS makes this better, why is it that the sound seems to be coming from my windows and stops when I crack my window a tiny bit? You would think it'd be the window creaking in the window seal.

I know it sounds odd that you roll your window down and it stops but trust me on this one.

                              Re: Creaking?

Creaking is coming from doors rubbing on body seal. You can remedy this by adding isolation tape to the edges of the door or doors in question where the edges contact the roof moulding. The part number for the tape is AKL 433 012 04 and is available from any dealership part dept.

Clean all painted surfaced with isopropyl alcohol before putting the tape on. Also make sure all the surfaces are clean and dry.

                              Hope this helps.
