platinums on VW engines especially the 16v and 8v engines are not recommended by the VW factory and definitely not recommended by any performance tuning shop. They have a different operating temperature and can upset the way the motronic computer operates. Platinum plugs are just good for long term usage such as 70-80K miles without changing plugs cuz they last longer but are one of the worst conductors of electricity and they have horrible cold start-up based on my experimentation. I tested +4's out on my 2.0 Golf for about 5000 miles and the idle was unstable at times, cold start was sort of off, and the overall feel of the car was not like it was before. I switched back to the OEM Bosch Silbers (which is the correct plug to use #FD8SR) and everything was back to normal. Also, because platinums have a different operating temp than the required plugs for these engines, the way they burn is different and can lead to plaque build up on your engine's cylinder walls and valves. This will not happen right away but if you use platinums for a long time, you will notice a decrease in overall performance and operation of your engine. Buying those $1 copper plugs is actually better than putting platinums in your engine. Platinums are generally colder plugs which are ideal for use on boosted (turbo/supercharged) cars such as the G60 and 1.8T engines because of high temp and high heat conditions. There are a fair share of people who swear by platinums and that's their opinion. VW and tuner shops DO NOT use them in normally aspirated 16v and 8v engines and I have experienced first hand how poorly they perform on my 98 2.0 Golf. Do yourself a favor and replace them with copper or silver plugs.Graeme

(The unsuitable-ness of platinum for high-boost applications comes from my two friends, one who had a 460+ hp at the wheels mkIII supra, and the other one with an Integra GS-R with a Jackson Racing supercharger that runs high 13's/low 14's all day long with his tiny jockey brother driving it)
