can you tell me why in all the VW's and Audis the 50km/HR is marked in red???

There are three answers depending on who you talk to.

1: It's redline for first, my old rabit didn't have a tach and 50 was still red
2: It's the lowest speed you can be going in 5th before you bog the hell out of your engine.
3: It's the default residential speed limit in many countries.

3 sounds the most likely but I've never read/heard a definitive answer from a VW engineer.

I would say 3 too, but my 91 golf had other marks too, and I can't remember where they were........
