Man, no kidding!! The amount of money people lose just in changing cars every few years could more than make up for the bit you probably spend on yours.

      Re: VW vs Wife..

Thanks again for the comments, NVD members!!

My bill for the brakes servicing done at NL was $26 for parts (replaced one cylinder or something, that was leaking), and $200 for labor ($242 total). As SOON as I got home (I had left an earlier phone message for the wife, stating the cost of the next maintenance), after seeing the brake bill, the wife said, "See this $200 for labor--you're NOT going back to NL for this next work..." BUT--she did have a solution!! She knows a very good mechanic who works out of his garage (I have used him a few times). I can get him to replace the struts and shocks, his labor rate is a lot lower, and that would be acceptable to us both!! WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The NL service guy did say that if I ever wanted to sell my car, a lot of Northland VW personel are interested!!

Yea, it pays to fuss over your VW!!! Even this wife seems to like the attention it gets, and has said more than once to someone, "Not bad for an '88, eh??" VW forever!!!!!!!

        Re: VW vs Wife..

well being a semi single guy lol i'll sorta chime in.. if its maintenance then thats really no questions asked.. i'd rather have a proper operating and safe vechile than it breaking down or killing me 6 months later from me being cheap..

but if its mods well thats another story.. food for the next month or new headlights.. i think i'd rather eat than see the road better.. but i spose if i can see the road better i can road hunt a deer for food jk.. IMO it depends on your budget and what you want to do with your car and money

I think you have to give some NVD'ers a shot at buying it before NL techs!! Think of all the free help and support we give you, all NL does is take your money

I would agree with her in the fact that taking a older car to the dealership is overkill. Most old vw's if they need any special tools at all, are easy and cheap to get. Also paying a premium for labour is just not worth it.
I am lucky that my wife lets me get away with most mods etc and I have earned the trust that I am not just going out and blowing money we don't have. That alone tells me I married the right woman

My Hubby is great about Maintience and if I wanted to do mods no problem as long as the funds are there for bills. I am working my Ass off to get cash for winter Snow Tires. I have only Saturday off this week and then I work 6 days straight again. I'm just thinking of the cash that can get new tires, rotate my tires I have now, get another oil change before winter. Looking into oil pan heaters and the coolant ones. I need to get a few days off to try down to see you guys and talk to few in person and maybe get some help for the blockheater stuff.

                        An update:

Phoned a couple of places for ball park estimates for new strut mounts and shocks--Crappy Tire-$608, Fountain Tire-around $800 (including alignment).
Friends of mine said to avoid Crappy Tire like the plague... Wife agreed I could make the Fountain Tire appt. in the next week or so!!!!!

We were going to get laminate flooring installed, but after the actual quote came in, we decided we have to keep saving for it, and maybe try again next year. This now frees up money for the Jetta, that would have been ear marked for the flooring---WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!! Will I now be able to go over railway crossings with just a subtle "bump-bump" like I could when it was new?? Looking forward to this next upgrade!!!

Install the laminate yourself, its easy as pie and if you wait for a sale at a place like timbertown you can get pretty good stuff for 1.50 or less /sqft!

Werd. That stuff is ridiculously easy to install. Only extreme suckers pay someone else to install laminate. My mom got some nice laminate at timbertown for 85 cents a square foot, her and my little sisters installed it on a saturday afternoon.

That is what friends like you, Mike and James are for to help out a friend Like Slalomguy.

Hey Slalomguy Check out different flooring companies in your area, we did. For ours installed it was under 3 thousand because my Husband works nights 12 hours welding 5 days a week.

We bought from Carpet Superstore here in Edmonton. Don't buy the cheap laminate go 8mm and up. The cheap stuff will do funky things.

IKEA Also sells Laminate at a good price with many choices.

3 Thousand!!!??? did you laminate the walls too? that's crazy, I bought decent (not the cheapest you could get) laminate for our front room and ajoining entrance and closet for about 750. I know it's all about square footage but I'd have to laminate my whole house for it to cost even 2000 in material cost.

And werd to timbrtown, that's where I got mine too. It was that crazy German stuff.
