  • Looking to buy 2004/2005 Jetta TDI, advice?

I am looking to buy a 2004 or 2005 Jetta TDI with most if not all the toys. I am not all that familiar with VW's but I do know a little. I have been looking at the 2006 and I am leaning towards a 2004 or 2005 instead.

Does anyone have any advice about this? I am definitely open to listening to any suggestions or advice.

    Thanks for your help!

in all honesty the newer platform is a better overall car.. but if you want to save money a mk4 is still a great car and cannot be beat.. either way you'll enjoy what you get.

Well TDI's are very much in demand these days due to the fuel prices!

You might want to also consider the Golf since it is the same car as the Jetta except in Hatch form. The Golf has more passenger space overall and just as much if not more carrying capacity...

You are probably going to be able to get a good deal on a Mk4 Jetta since the "new jetta" is now out. Maybe talk to vwsalesguy at 5th Ave since he frequents the boards and asserts that he can get newveedub members a better deal.

Well honestly due to the extreemly high demand for any tdi i think that what you will find is that the price between a CPO and a new Jetta will be very marginal, for a few thousand differnce you can step into the MK5. And IMO i think it is a far better car for the money, i would also welcome you to come and drive my car to see what you think of the New Jetta .

what about an 1.8t like an 02-03? you could proably find one with decent km/price...there a blast to drive, also not bad gas mileage

Thanks, it is the only colour that makes the car stand out.

I very much appreciate all of your advice and might be leaning towards the 2006 model after all.

Is it true that the golf has more seating room AND just as much storage room if not more? I believe the seating room bit, but storage room too? That's pretty amazing if true for sure.

VW sales guy........is that fair to say in your opinion?

It definitely has more seating room, there is much more headroom in the back and the same distance between the rear seats and the front seats. Ask a tall person to sit in the back of a Jetta and they will whack their head on the roof because it slopes down for the rear window.

As for cargo room, well, hatchback vs trunk. The hatch has more height. The cars are the same length pretty much. The hatch also opens wider than a trunk so you can fit larger maximum sized objects. Many things I could fit in my Jetta trunk however I can't get them through the trunk opening (although I can squeeze things in by folding down the rear seats).

The storage room in the Golf's is amazing. I just picked my 05 golf up yesterday (thanks vwsalesguy!), and I got kicked out of my house last night. I have to pick up all of my stuff today, and it's crazy just how much you can get into these cars, and still have room left over.

The Golf definately seems a bit shorter than the jetta, but it definately has more room. The headroom in the back is excellent as well, I've had 2 taller people back there already, and they're both pretty happy with it.

Like you, I was torn between the 06 jetta, and the 05 golf. I went with the golf because of the increased storage room, the car itself is a bit shorter (or at least it seems it), and the phatnoise system works in an 05 golf, whereas it won't in the 06 jetta.

You all have been very helpful and there have been some great points made for sure. Thanks

So I guess after seeing what you all have had to say so far and the great approval of the Golf over the Jetta in so many categories, I suppose my question would now be, why would you buy a Jetta rather then a Golf?

I realize there are a few more toys and upgrades on a Jetta that is not available on a Golf, but other then that, what is the $10,000 going into that makes the Jetta more appealing to an average guy like me?

                            Hey Ryan

I tryed to PM you but this thing is fuct anyway if you are going to go with the golf and you are not in a hurry for a car i would wait until spring for the MK5, however if you dont really need the hatch you can beat the size and cargo space in the new Jetta, it has far more rear passenger room that both the MK4 golf and Jetta. Let me know if you want to do an over night demo with both cars to get a handle of the size.

                            Cheers

Reasons to choose the Jetta over the Golf are:

                              - You prefer how the Jetta looks

                              - You want a "New Jetta" (the new Golf/GTI is not out yet)

                              - You find a better priced Jetta
(they are a bit more common than Golfs in Canada)

                              - You can't find the option package you want on a Golf/GTI

I drive a Jetta, in retrospect I would rather have had a Golf, but I still like the Jetta, they are basically the same car.
