If you had the option between the following cars to drive year-round in Calgary, which would you choose and why.

Porsche 911 C4S (997)
BMW M5 (E90)
Mercedes E55 (Kompressor)
Mercedes CLS55
Mercedes SL500
Audi RS4 (if it comes to Canada - anyone know this?)

Werd... I would put the M5 ahead of the RS4, but you said year round, and I wouldn't want RWD in the winter.

1. 911 C4S - Killer fun in the summer, and good traction in the winter (not first choice if it's an auto though)
2. RS4 - Classy 4-door with an ass-load of power, and still all-wheel drive
3. M5 - well.....because it's an M5!

For me it is because they don't offer manual transmissions.

Well, in this case, the car is for my dad who wants an auto - so even the 911 would be a tiptronic.

Some good feedback though. He's already put a deposit on a Porsche but is now questioning the intelligence behind driving it in the winter - even if it is awd. There's an E55 sat at Lonestar at the moment that he's tempted by, and has expressed interest in the M5 - but doesn't like the idea of being on a waiting list for over a year.

Anymore thoughts?

IMO getting an automatic porsche is pretty much a waste of money... maybe not so bad for something like the M5 which is a 4 door sedan. If I got into someone's 911 and it was an auto I would smirk. :P

I'd drive a Porsche here in the winter on all but the worst days as long as I could garage it at night and while at work. Maybe even on the worst days.

I feel the same way unless it was a dsg/smg type of auto (which I would think would be available in a Porsche no?)

I know, I gurn my dad about it, too! But apparently it has to be an auto so that my mum can drive it, too (she can barely drive an auto let alone a manual). My dad's getting to be old (turning 60 next year) so he said that he 'doesn't give a feck' if someone thinkg his automatic porsche is 'naff'.

As far as I know, the current waiting list is anywhere from 12-16 months. This is based on BMW Canada's shipment of 'M' vehicles (not just the 5 series) to Western Canada, because even though they are not limited edition vehicles, BMW does not want a whole bunch of them in one area. They changed this for their new generation cars because of the demand for the previous 'M' vehicles. I am sure that you have all noticed the amount of M3's around town......they don't want as many in one area this time around.

Edit: If your dad can wait, the new M5 comes with a 7-speed SMG gearbox.....pure sex!

Word on the street is that a 6 sp. manual will be available next year.
